The Austin Toros’ 2010-11 season marked the franchise’s first year at the newly opened Cedar Park Center, but the move did not translate into the on-court success the organization had enjoyed in previous seasons. Under head coach Brad Jones, Austin finished 22-28 and missed the playoffs, ending a run of consecutive postseason appearances. The roster featured a mix of established D-League talent and NBA-assigned prospects, including Marcus Cousin, Lance Thomas, Kevin Palmer, and James Anderson. Marcus Cousin emerged as the club’s leading scorer and rebounder, while veteran guard Carldell Johnson directed the offense throughout the season. Although the Toros fell out of contention in a competitive Western Conference, the 2010-11 campaign served as a transitional year between the franchise’s earlier playoff teams and the championship run that would follow just one season later.

HeatingUp Impact Index: Team Impact Spotlight

Player Name Role Tier MPG Usage Tier PPG RPG APG STK (SPG + BPG) Impact Index Notes Awards
Danny Green Short-Term NBA Assignment Wing (1.05) 32.0 Medium 19.0 7.0 2.0 2.0 69.30 As a short-term NBA assignment, Green immediately supplied two-way wing value, combining perimeter shooting with active defense; his one Austin appearance came after San Antonio assigned him to the Toros in April before recalling him the next day. (ShamSports) None
Marcus Cousin Interior Offensive Anchor (1.10) 30.6 High 14.9 8.6 0.8 1.5 68.11 Cousin functioned as Austin’s physical interior hub, with his size allowing him to absorb post touches while controlling the glass. Contemporary coverage described his D-League emergence as a major step forward after an uneven start overseas, and he earned an NBA call-up during the season. (ShamSports) D-League All-Star (2011); All-NBA D-League Second Team (2011); All-Defensive Second Team (2011)
Carldell Johnson Franchise Floor General (1.10) 34.0 High 12.3 4.0 6.0 1.6 63.10 Johnson was the Toros’ primary organizer, operating as a pass-first point guard while still offering enough perimeter shooting to keep defenses honest. His long-running Austin role was built around ball control, playmaking and steady half-court direction. (ShamSports) None
Leo Lyons Stretch Forward Creator (1.10) 29.6 High 14.9 6.0 1.6 1.1 62.30 Lyons gave Austin a mobile scoring forward who could stretch the floor rather than simply live around the rim. His February-March surge was significant enough for him to be named D-League Performer of the Week after a three-game stretch in which his scoring and rebounding jumped sharply. (NBA.com) D-League Performer of the Week (2011)
Vernon Hamilton Attack-Minded Point Guard (1.05) 25.0 High 13.5 3.5 3.8 1.3 55.69 Hamilton’s value came from pressure on the ball and downhill creation rather than pure spot-up work. His defensive reputation followed him from Clemson, where he had been known for generating steals, and that disruptive style remained part of his professional identity. (Clemson University Athletics) None
Aubrey Coleman Lead Shot Creator (1.05) 27.0 High 13.4 4.5 2.1 1.6 54.43 Coleman arrived with a reputation as a volume scorer and continued to attack from the mid-range and off the bounce. Earlier scouting noted his tendency to dominate possessions and hunt difficult shots, which helps explain the aggressive offensive role he occupied in Austin. (ShamSports) None
James Anderson Scoring Wing Reintegrator (1.05) 25.1 Medium 14.7 4.9 2.0 1.6 53.59 Anderson’s Toros stint was primarily developmental: San Antonio used Austin to get its injured first-round pick back into game shape. He immediately showed NBA-level shot-making, including efficient three-point shooting, before returning to the Spurs. (OurSports Central) None
Kyle Weaver Two-Way Wing Facilitator (1.05) 30.4 Medium 13.2 5.0 2.9 2.1 53.59 Weaver brought more than scoring to Austin, functioning as a long wing who could rebound, defend and make secondary reads. His trade from Iowa and subsequent NBA call-up reflected the league-wide perception that he could contribute across several areas rather than simply chase points. (ShamSports) All-NBA D-League Honorable Mention (2011)
Kevin Palmer Slashing Wing Scorer (1.05) 25.4 Medium 12.7 5.0 1.3 2.0 48.51 Palmer operated as a scoring wing with enough rebounding activity to play bigger than a conventional guard. Earlier reporting around his arrival emphasized his offensive production at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and that scoring instinct translated into an aggressive professional role. (OurSports Central) None
Lance Thomas Starting Interior Utility Forward (1.05) 29.9 Medium 12.6 5.5 1.1 1.0 46.66 Thomas supplied Austin with a physically useful forward who could defend, rebound and finish without requiring the offense to revolve around him. His Duke background and role as a starter for the Toros made him a natural developmental piece for an NBA-oriented system. (bourbonstreetshots.com) None
Thomas Gardner Veteran Perimeter Gunner (1.05) 28.3 Medium 12.4 2.3 2.0 0.9 40.66 Gardner’s role leaned heavily toward perimeter scoring, particularly three-point volume, but injuries interrupted his Austin tenure. The Toros ultimately moved him to Reno in February as part of the deal that brought Eric Boateng to Austin. (OurSports Central) None
Tre Kelley Backup Playmaking Guard (1.00) 23.5 Medium 9.4 1.8 3.4 0.4 33.00 Kelley was used mainly as a secondary ball-handler rather than a primary scoring centerpiece. His Austin stay was brief, and the Toros released him in March for personal reasons, opening a roster spot for Stephen McDowell. (OurSports Central) None
Eric Dawson Mobile Frontcourt Defender (1.00) 18.1 Low 7.4 5.1 1.4 2.0 31.80 Dawson’s minutes were limited, but his profile was built around activity on both ends: rebounding, interior defense and opportunistic finishing. His later development into a major Austin frontcourt piece suggests the underlying defensive and athletic tools were already evident during this season. (ShamSports) None
Marcus Hubbard Energy Big Reserve (1.00) 18.1 Low 7.6 6.1 0.4 1.0 30.20 Hubbard’s role was fundamentally physical, emphasizing rebounding, interior positioning and defensive effort. His former college coach specifically praised his willingness to embrace fundamentals and serve as an example for teammates when he joined the Toros. (Angelo State University Athletics) None
Moses Ehambe Instant-Offense Three-Point Specialist (1.00) 22.1 Medium 10.2 2.1 0.9 0.4 29.92 Ehambe was the classic spacing specialist, and his shooting could swing a game quickly. In one memorable March performance he buried nine threes against Texas, reinforcing the reputation that ultimately made him valuable enough to be moved to Iowa at the trade deadline. (OurSports Central) None
Lewis Clinch Defensive Combo Guard (1.05) 21.4 Low 8.6 2.3 1.9 1.1 29.19 Clinch’s game was built more around athleticism and defensive pressure than polished perimeter shooting. After two seasons in Austin, he was waived and quickly picked up by Maine, where contemporary reporting identified him as a familiar Georgia Tech teammate of Mario West. (The Portland Press Herald) None
Garrett Williamson Defensive Utility Wing (1.00) 21.3 Low 6.6 2.1 2.0 1.2 23.80 Williamson entered the Toros system as a defense-first wing whose athleticism allowed him to attack the open floor. Contemporary scouting characterized him as an aggressive defender who was improving his ability to get downhill while still lacking a reliable outside shot. (ShamSports) None
Eric Boateng Rim-Protecting Reserve Center (1.00) 17.1 Low 4.9 4.9 0.5 1.2 23.00 Boateng’s value was concentrated around the paint, where his size and rebounding gave Austin a physical backup option. He arrived in February in the Gardner trade after establishing himself as a five-point, five-rebound interior player with Idaho. (OurSports Central) None
Jermaine Beal Change-of-Pace Reserve Guard (1.00) 18.7 Low 6.9 1.6 2.2 0.6 22.60 Beal provided secondary creation in limited minutes, with enough ball-handling ability to keep reserve units functional. His Austin stint included a 15-point performance against Dakota before he was moved to Erie near the trade deadline. None
Michael Joiner Veteran Frontcourt Connector (1.00) 16.7 Low 5.4 3.1 0.9 0.9 20.60 Joiner filled a connective frontcourt role, contributing as a rebounder and occasional perimeter threat rather than demanding possessions. Contemporary Austin coverage described him as a returning veteran who had already established himself in the Toros organization. (OurSports Central) None
Stephen McDowell Emergency Backcourt Reserve (1.00) 18.0 Low 6.3 1.0 2.0 0.0 18.60 McDowell arrived late in the season after Austin needed another guard, bringing prior D-League experience and a reputation as a capable secondary playmaker. His acquisition was directly tied to the departure of Tre Kelley in March. (OurSports Central) None
