The Houston Rockets 1986–87 season was built around Hakeem Olajuwon’s dominant all-around play, as he anchored the offense with elite scoring while controlling the glass and protecting the rim defensively. Rodney McCray provided versatile production across multiple areas, with Robert Reid and Allen Leavell supplying reliable perimeter scoring and playmaking. Houston relied on its strong interior presence and balanced attack, but injuries and inconsistent overall play contributed to a step back after the previous season’s Finals appearance.
