The 2003–04 season was a landmark year for the Detroit Pistons. Under head coach Larry Brown, the team emphasized a defense-first philosophy. The midseason acquisition of Rasheed Wallace added versatility to the frontcourt, complementing Ben Wallace’s defensive prowess. The starting lineup of Chauncey Billups, Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, Rasheed Wallace, and Ben Wallace became known for their cohesion and unselfish play.
In the playoffs, the Pistons’ defense stifled opponents, culminating in a decisive 4–1 victory over the heavily favored Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals. Chauncey Billups was named Finals MVP, averaging 21.0 points and 5.2 assists per game during the series.
