The 1997–98 Dallas Mavericks relied heavily on Michael Finley as their primary scorer and all-around contributor, while A.C. Green provided rebounding and interior stability and Samaki Walker added frontcourt support. Steve Nash emerged as the team’s main playmaker despite a reduced offensive role. Dallas showed balanced rebounding and respectable ball movement, but inefficient offense and below-average defense limited the team’s ability to compete consistently.

PLAYER NAME ROLE TIER MPG USAGE TIER PPG RPG APG STK IMPACT INDEX NOTES AWARDS
Michael Finley Starter/Star 41.4 High 21.5 5.3 4.9 2.0 88.18 Primary scoring wing for Dallas, Finley carried a massive offensive workload and rarely left the floor. His blend of shot creation, transition scoring and secondary playmaking helped drive the offense, while 21.5 points and 4.9 assists per game reflected how much responsibility rested on his shoulders. MVP-18
Cedric Ceballos Starter/Star 30.3 High 16.9 6.0 2.1 1.6 68.59 Slashing forward play defined Ceballos’ brief Dallas stint. In just 12 games he supplied efficient interior scoring, attacked mismatches and added rebounding support, giving the Mavericks another reliable offensive option alongside Finley.
Shawn Bradley Starter/Star 28.5 Medium 11.4 8.1 0.9 4.1 59.77 Rim protection was Bradley’s calling card. Opponents regularly altered shots around the basket because of his length, and his 3.3 blocks per game made him one of the league’s premier interior deterrents while also providing solid rebounding.
Dennis Scott Starter/Star 34.6 High 13.6 3.8 2.5 1.4 56.50 Floor-spacing specialist Scott filled an important perimeter role, launching threes at a high rate and stretching defenses beyond the arc. His shooting gravity created room for Dallas’ ball handlers even when the shot wasn’t falling consistently.
Samaki Walker Key Contributor 25.0 Medium 8.9 7.4 0.6 1.7 42.40 Physical interior play was Walker’s biggest contribution. The young forward generated extra possessions through offensive rebounding, battled for position in the paint and steadily developed into a dependable frontcourt piece.
A.C. Green Starter/Star 32.3 Low 7.3 8.1 1.5 1.3 40.04 Veteran glue-guy Green impacted games without needing touches. He anchored the glass, defended bigger forwards and brought stability to a young roster, with his rebounding and positioning often outweighing his scoring totals. NBA Champion 1987, NBA Champion 1988, NBA Champion 2000
Hubert Davis Key Contributor 29.4 Medium 11.1 2.1 1.9 0.6 36.73 Spot-up shooting remained Davis’ elite skill. Defenses had to respect his accuracy from deep, and his efficient perimeter scoring complemented Dallas’ higher-usage players while helping maintain offensive spacing.
Robert Pack Key Contributor 24.3 Medium 7.8 2.8 3.5 1.8 36.61 Speed was still Pack’s biggest weapon. In limited appearances he pushed tempo, penetrated defenses and created opportunities for teammates, providing a burst of playmaking whenever healthy enough to contribute.
Khalid Reeves Key Contributor 23.8 Medium 8.7 2.3 2.8 1.1 34.42 Combo-guard versatility helped Reeves carve out a regular role. He handled secondary creation duties, chipped in as a scorer and gave Dallas flexibility by playing either guard position throughout the season.
Erick Strickland Key Contributor 22.5 Medium 7.6 2.4 2.5 0.9 30.49 Strickland functioned as a utility backcourt player who balanced ball-handling responsibilities with perimeter defense. His offensive efficiency fluctuated, but his versatility kept him involved in the rotation.
Shawn Respert Bench 21.5 Medium 8.2 2.7 1.7 0.5 28.82 Instant-offense scoring was the focus whenever Respert entered games. Though his sample was small, he looked comfortable hunting jumpers and creating points quickly off the bench.
Kurt Thomas Bench 14.6 Low 7.4 4.8 0.6 0.2 26.00 Rugged interior play stood out during Thomas’ brief appearance with Dallas. He attacked the glass aggressively and played through contact, showing traits that would later define his long NBA career. Rookie season
Chris Anstey Bench 16.6 Low 5.9 3.8 0.9 1.5 24.20 Developing center Anstey showed flashes of touch and mobility for a seven-footer. His role was limited, but he occasionally contributed as a weak-side shot blocker and rebounder in reserve minutes. Rookie season
Martin Müürsepp Bench 14.7 Low 5.7 2.8 0.7 1.0 20.40 Skill and versatility were Müürsepp’s strengths. The Estonian forward mixed perimeter shooting with solid ball movement, giving Dallas a different look from its more traditional frontcourt options.
Eric Riley Bench 13.9 Low 3.6 3.4 0.6 1.6 18.40 Defensive energy defined Riley’s minutes. He focused on protecting the paint, contesting shots and battling on the boards rather than looking for offensive opportunities.
Kevin Ollie Bench 13.4 Low 2.9 1.3 2.0 0.4 13.20 Pass-first point guard instincts shaped Ollie’s role. He concentrated on organizing the offense and getting teammates into sets, with scoring remaining a secondary responsibility. Rookie season
Bubba Wells Bench 10.1 Low 3.3 1.7 0.9 0.5 12.80 Athletic wing play and hustle were Wells’ path to minutes. He provided energy in short bursts, attacked loose balls and worked to make defensive plays whenever called upon. Rookie season
Adrian Caldwell Bench 3.0 Low 0.0 0.0 0.0 0.0 0.00 Caldwell’s season consisted of a single appearance, leaving too small a sample to establish a meaningful on-court role or statistical impact.
TEAM TOTALS 242.7 91.4 40.1 18.7 13.6 634.17 Dallas leaned heavily on Michael Finley’s star-level offensive workload while Shawn Bradley anchored the defense with elite rim protection. Veterans such as A.C. Green, Hubert Davis and Dennis Scott filled specialist roles around a young roster still building toward future contention.
