The San Antonio Spurs have enjoyed one of the most stable ownership histories in professional sports. Since the franchise’s early years in the American Basketball Association (ABA), only a handful of ownership groups have guided the organization, helping build one of the NBA’s most successful franchises.
Original Ownership Groups (1967–1983)
The franchise was founded in 1967 as the Dallas Chaparrals of the ABA. The team was owned by a group of Texas investors before relocating to San Antonio in 1973 and becoming the Spurs. Various local ownership groups controlled the franchise during its ABA and early NBA years, helping establish professional basketball in South Texas.
Red McCombs (1983–1993)
Texas businessman Red McCombs purchased the Spurs in 1983. Under his ownership, the franchise remained financially stable and continued to be one of the NBA’s stronger organizations. McCombs eventually sold the team in 1993 but remained an important figure in Spurs history.
Peter Holt and Spurs Sports & Entertainment (1993–2021)
A group led by businessman Peter Holt acquired the Spurs in 1993. This ownership era became the most successful period in franchise history. Under Holt’s leadership, San Antonio won five NBA championships (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014) and established a culture of sustained excellence built around Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginóbili, and Gregg Popovich.
The ownership group also expanded Spurs Sports & Entertainment, overseeing the growth of the organization beyond the NBA team itself.
Peter J. Holt and Spurs Sports & Entertainment (2021–Present)
In 2021, Peter Holt transitioned leadership responsibilities to his son, Peter J. Holt, who became managing partner and governor of the Spurs. The Holt family retained control of the franchise through Spurs Sports & Entertainment, continuing the organization’s long-standing emphasis on stability and long-term success.
