He loves holding the ball at the elbow or above the break, waiting for a cutter to force the defence into a decision, and he has an exceptional feel for delaying that split second longer until the passing lane actually opens. Plenty of bigs can make reads; Sabonis creates them. His dribble handoffs are equally dangerous because he’ll flip the angle at the last moment, pin the defender with his body and immediately roll into space if opponents overplay the shooter. That’s where his offensive value becomes difficult to contain. He scores through relentless footwork rather than explosiveness, constantly re-establishing position with reverse pivots, shoulder fakes and quick spins that leave defenders reacting to the second move instead of the first. The trade-off is that teams with long, physical rim protectors can crowd his finishing space and encourage him into awkward hooks over length, while his lack of vertical pop limits his ability to simply finish above traffic.
