The New York Knicks 2019–20 lacked a single dominant offensive focal point, with Marcus Morris Sr., Julius Randle, and RJ Barrett sharing much of the scoring responsibility. Randle also led the frontcourt on the glass, while Mitchell Robinson provided efficient interior finishing, rebounding, and shot-blocking. The statistics reflect a team that relied on physical play inside and balanced scoring contributions but received limited playmaking and perimeter production.

HeatingUp Impact Index: Team Impact Spotlight
| PLAYER NAME | ROLE TIER | MPG | USAGE TIER | PPG | RPG | APG | STK | IMPACT INDEX | NOTES | AWARDS |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Julius Randle | Starter/Star | 32.5 | High | 19.5 | 9.7 | 3.1 | 1.1 | 87.91 | Physical interior scorer who became New York’s primary offensive option after arriving in free agency. Randle generated offense from the elbows and block, carrying a heavy creation load on a roster short on shot makers while posting 19.5 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. | — |
| Marcus Morris | Starter/Star | 32.3 | High | 19.6 | 5.4 | 1.4 | 1.2 | 72.86 | Isolation-oriented forward who often functioned as the club’s late-clock bailout option before his midseason trade. His 43.9% three-point shooting gave New York rare floor spacing, and he led the team in scoring at the time of the deal. | — |
| RJ Barrett | Starter/Star | 30.4 | High | 14.3 | 5.0 | 2.6 | 1.3 | 61.51 | Left-handed slashing wing thrown into a major role immediately as a teenager. Barrett attacked the rim relentlessly and flashed playmaking instincts, though inconsistent shooting reflected the adjustment to NBA defenses. | Rookie of the Year Voting 8th (2020) |
| Elfrid Payton | Starter/Star | 27.7 | Medium | 10.0 | 4.7 | 7.2 | 2.0 | 57.02 | Pass-first lead guard who quietly orchestrated much of New York’s offense. His ability to pressure the paint and create for teammates showed up in a strong 7.2 assists per game while also contributing defensively. | — |
| Mitchell Robinson | Key Contributor | 23.1 | Medium | 9.7 | 7.0 | 0.6 | 2.9 | 46.89 | Rim-running center whose impact came almost entirely around the basket. Robinson finished an elite 74.2% from the field and remained one of the league’s most disruptive shot blockers despite playing limited minutes. | NBA Field Goal Percentage Leader (2020) |
| Bobby Portis | Key Contributor | 21.1 | Medium | 10.1 | 5.1 | 1.5 | 0.8 | 40.19 | Instant-offense big man who stretched defenses with his shooting and provided scoring punch off the bench. Portis frequently changed the tempo of second units through aggressive shot hunting. | — |
| Maurice Harkless | Key Contributor | 23.8 | Low | 6.8 | 3.3 | 1.7 | 1.1 | 27.09 | Defense-first wing acquired late in the season who filled a complementary role. Harkless focused on perimeter assignments, transition play, and connective passing rather than carrying offensive responsibility. | — |
| Taj Gibson | Key Contributor | 16.5 | Low | 6.1 | 4.3 | 0.8 | 0.9 | 25.83 | Veteran frontcourt stabilizer whose value went beyond the box score. Gibson brought physical screens, reliable interior defense, and leadership to one of the league’s youngest rotations. | — |
| Reggie Bullock | Key Contributor | 23.6 | Low | 8.1 | 2.3 | 1.4 | 1.0 | 26.04 | Spot-up wing who spent much of the year working back from injury. When available, Bullock supplied perimeter shooting and solid team defense without needing many touches. | — |
| Frank Ntilikina | Key Contributor | 20.8 | Low | 6.3 | 2.1 | 3.0 | 1.2 | 26.46 | Defensive-minded guard whose length and versatility often earned him difficult perimeter assignments. Offensively he played a supporting role, focusing on ball movement and secondary creation. | — |
| Damyean Dotson | Bench | 17.4 | Low | 6.7 | 1.9 | 1.2 | 0.6 | 20.80 | Reserve shooting guard who provided occasional scoring bursts from the perimeter. His role centered on floor spacing and energy minutes off the bench. | — |
| Kevin Knox | Bench | 17.9 | Low | 6.4 | 2.8 | 0.9 | 0.8 | 21.80 | Combo forward whose sophomore season remained a developmental project. Knox showed flashes as a transition scorer and shooter but struggled to find consistent efficiency. | — |
| Allonzo Trier | Bench | 12.1 | Low | 6.5 | 1.2 | 1.2 | 0.3 | 18.40 | Shot-creating guard who looked to score whenever opportunities appeared. Trier’s attacking style produced efficient offense in limited minutes, though his role fluctuated throughout the season. | — |
| Dennis Smith Jr. | Bench | 15.8 | Low | 5.5 | 2.3 | 2.9 | 1.0 | 23.40 | Athletic point guard whose season was disrupted by injuries and inconsistency. Even so, he occasionally flashed the downhill burst and defensive activity that made him a notable prospect earlier in his career. | — |
| Wayne Ellington | Bench | 15.5 | Low | 5.1 | 1.8 | 1.2 | 0.5 | 17.20 | Movement shooter used primarily to create spacing around the offense. Most of his value came from running defenders through screens and opening driving lanes for teammates. | — |
| Kadeem Allen | Bench | 11.7 | Low | 5.0 | 0.9 | 2.1 | 0.7 | 17.40 | Reserve guard who handled spot minutes with an emphasis on ball pressure and playmaking. His contributions were modest but generally steady when called upon. | — |
| Ignas Brazdeikis | Bench | 5.9 | Low | 1.9 | 0.6 | 0.4 | 0.1 | 6.00 | Rookie wing who spent most of the year developing outside the regular rotation. His brief appearances hinted at an aggressive scoring mentality and willingness to attack the rim. | — |
| TEAM TOTALS | — | 241.9 | — | 105.8 | 46.5 | 22.1 | 12.3 | 557.11 | New York’s rebuilding roster leaned heavily on Julius Randle, Marcus Morris, and rookie RJ Barrett for offense. The team finished 21-45, but Robinson’s elite rim protection and Barrett’s development offered long-term positives during a transition season. | No Playoff Appearance (2020) |
