The 2005–06 season marked the return of head coach Phil Jackson to the Lakers. The team finished with a 45–37 record, securing the 7th seed in the Western Conference. They faced the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the playoffs, taking a 3–1 series lead before ultimately losing in seven games. A highlight of the season was Kobe Bryant’s historic 81-point game against the Toronto Raptors on January 22, 2006, the second-highest single-game scoring performance in NBA history.
