The Columbus Riverdragons’ 2001-02 season was one of the most successful in franchise history, as the club finished with a 39-17 record and established itself as a contender in the NBDL’s inaugural campaign. Coached by Jeff Malone, Columbus featured a veteran-heavy roster that adapted quickly to the league’s new format and consistently ranked among its top teams. Ansu Sesay emerged as one of the league’s premier players, combining scoring production with efficient all-around play, while guards Aaron Williams and Terrell Bell helped give the Riverdragons a steady offensive foundation. The strong regular season carried into the playoffs, where Columbus advanced to the league finals before falling to the Greenville Groove. Although the championship ultimately slipped away, the Riverdragons played a major role in shaping the NBDL’s first season and established an early winning tradition for the franchise.
