Player Archetype / Play Style
Andrew Wiggins’ player archetype is that of an athletic two-way wing, a slashing scoring forward whose value rises when he is defending top perimeter assignments, finishing plays efficiently, and adding secondary shot creation without needing to dominate the ball. At 6-foot-6 and 197 pounds, with long arms, high-end leaping ability, and fluid straight-line speed, he has the physical traits of a modern NBA wing who can play above the rim, absorb contact, and cover ground defensively. On defense, his best role is as a versatile perimeter stopper who can check wings, switch across matchups, contest with length, and use his mobility to stay disruptive on the ball and at the nail. Offensively, he is most effective as a downhill attacker, transition finisher, cutter, and complementary scorer who can also punish closeouts, hit spot-up jumpers, and create enough off the dribble to keep defenses honest. In full, Wiggins’ play style blends explosiveness, smooth athletic movement, and two-way flexibility, making him most dangerous as a high-level supporting wing rather than a pure offensive engine. - Andrew Wiggins’ playing weight is listed at 197 pounds (89 kilograms).

Fun Facts
- His father, Mitchell Wiggins (28 Sept 1959–13 Sept 2024), also played in the NBA, mostly for the Houston Rockets. Mitchell was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 1983-84, one year before the Bulls drafted Michael Jordan. By 1984-85, Mitchell was playing for the Rockets.
Player Insights
Andrew Wiggins has often faced criticism for not fully matching the expectations that came with being the No. 1 overall pick, but judging his career only through that lens misses important context. His father, Mitchell Wiggins, dealt with a long illness before his death in 2024, and while it is not possible to measure exactly how that affected Andrew’s play, it is reasonable to note that major personal circumstances can coincide with changes in on-court production. Wiggins still played a major role in the Warriors’ 2021-22 championship run and earned All-Star honors that season, reinforcing his value as more than a simple box-score player. His production has also shifted at times based on role, roster context, and team structure rather than ability alone. From an evaluation standpoint, I have argued that Wiggins deserves to be mentioned in a higher class of two-way wings than he is often given credit for, particularly because of his perimeter defense, athletic tools, and scoring ability. While comparisons to Scottie Pippen should be treated carefully given Pippen’s résumé and sustained body of work, Wiggins at his best has shown the kind of defensive impact and offensive versatility that can justify placing him in that conversation stylistically. I have no shame in comparing Andrew Wiggins to Scottie Pippen. It’s nothing against Scottie but it does something for Wiggins which is to get people to realize how big of a body he is. Many people assume Wiggins to be a shooting guard, but he’s a frontcourt player capable of defending just about any small forward in the league. For a frontcourt player, he’s very athletic. In the 90s, people said Scottie Pippen was the second-best player in the league and Scottie himself has claimed he was even better than Jordan. And that’s not as ridiculous as it sounds. But that just goes to show how underrated Andrew Wiggins is. You’d be lucky to find him being ranked inside the top 100 by most analysts. Sadly, not all players get to choose their roles in their teams or their coaches, etc. I hope he can regain his old stats and be the 20 points-per-game player he deserves to be. Interestingly, his father claimed his natural position was shooting guard and that the switch to small forward is what led to his statistical decline.
