Alabama basketball has produced SEC title anchors, All-Americans, Final Four stars and historic trailblazers across multiple eras. The program’s official history identifies Wendell Hudson as Alabama’s first African-American scholarship athlete and first SEC Player of the Year, Reggie King as the school’s all-time scoring leader, Leon Douglas as the only Crimson Tide men’s player to earn consensus All-America status, and Mark Sears as the face of Alabama’s first Final Four team while setting the program’s single-season scoring record. 1. Reggie King

  • Years at Alabama: 1975–1979
  • Position: Forward
  • Notable Achievements:
    • Alabama all-time scoring leader
    • Two-time second-team All-American
    • 1978 and 1979 SEC Player of the Year
    • One of the greatest rebounders in SEC history

King gets the top spot because his résumé combines elite peak production with unmatched Alabama career scoring. Alabama’s official All-Americans page says he finished with 2,168 points and 1,279 rebounds, earned national honors three times, and posted a school-record 747 points in 1978-79 while averaging 22.6 points per game. 2. Wendell Hudson

  • Years at Alabama: 1970–1973
  • Position: Forward
  • Notable Achievements:
    • First-team All-American
    • Alabama’s first SEC Player of the Year
    • Alabama’s first African-American scholarship athlete
    • First jersey retired in Alabama Athletics history

Hudson has a real argument for No. 1 because his legacy is both basketball greatness and institutional significance. Alabama states that he averaged 20.7 points and 12.1 rebounds as a senior, led the SEC in scoring, helped drive the program to its first postseason appearance, and later became the first athlete in school history to have a jersey retired. (Alabama Athletics)

3. Leon Douglas

  • Years at Alabama: 1972–1976
  • Position: Center
  • Notable Achievements:
    • Alabama’s only consensus All-American
    • Three-time national honoree
    • Led Alabama to its first NCAA Tournament appearance
    • Top-three scorer and top-two rebounder in program history

Douglas belongs in the top tier because very few Alabama players can match his combination of honors and production. Alabama says he remains the only Crimson Tide player to earn consensus All-America recognition, and that his 1974-75 season helped lead the Tide to its first NCAA Tournament trip, an SEC title and a final AP top-10 ranking. (Alabama Athletics)

4. Mark Sears

  • Years at Alabama: 2022–2025
  • Position: Guard
  • Notable Achievements:
    • 2025 consensus first-team All-American
    • 2024 AP second-team All-American
    • Led Alabama to its first Final Four
    • Alabama single-season scoring record holder

Sears ranks this high because no recent Alabama player has combined individual recognition with postseason breakthrough the way he did. Alabama says he led the school to its first Final Four, scored a program-record 797 points in 2023-24, and by 2025 had become a consensus first-team All-American with 1,950 career points in Tuscaloosa. (Alabama Athletics)

5. Robert Horry

  • Years at Alabama: 1988–1992
  • Position: Forward
  • Notable Achievements:
    • Three SEC Tournament championships
    • Two NCAA Sweet 16 appearances
    • Alabama career blocks leader
    • 2011 SEC Legend

Horry places this high because he was a massive winning piece in one of Alabama’s strongest eras and remains one of the most famous players the program has ever produced. Alabama says he finished with 1,591 points, 929 rebounds, 168 steals and a program-record 286 blocks while helping the Tide reach two Sweet 16s and win three SEC Tournament titles. (Alabama Athletics)

6. Derrick McKey

  • Years at Alabama: 1984–1987
  • Position: Center/Forward
  • Notable Achievements:
    • Multi-outlet All-American
    • Three SEC regular-season titles
    • 1987 SEC Tournament champion
    • Star of one of Alabama’s best teams

McKey deserves this spot because he anchored high-level team success and still produced elite individual honors. Alabama says he averaged 18.6 points and 7.5 rebounds in 1986-87, earned All-America recognition from several outlets, and helped the Tide win three SEC regular-season titles in his three seasons. (Alabama Athletics)

7. Brandon Miller

  • Years at Alabama: 2022–2023
  • Position: Forward
  • Notable Achievements:
    • AP first-team All-American
    • NABC Freshman of the Year
    • SEC Player of the Year
    • SEC Freshman of the Year and Tournament MVP

Miller only played one season at Alabama, but the peak was so explosive that he is impossible to leave out. Alabama says he became the first SEC player ever to win SEC Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Tournament MVP in the same season while leading the Tide to an SEC regular-season title, an SEC Tournament title and a No. 1 NCAA seed. (Alabama Athletics)

8. Ennis Whatley

  • Years at Alabama: 1981–1983
  • Position: Guard
  • Notable Achievements:
    • All-American
    • Alabama career leader in assists per game
    • One of the program’s best playmakers ever
    • First-round NBA draft pick

Whatley’s case is built around elite backcourt play and historic passing value. Alabama says his 220 assists in 1982-83 set a school record at the time, and his 6.32 assists per game remains the best career average in program history. (Alabama Athletics)

9. Herbert Jones

  • Years at Alabama: 2017–2021
  • Position: Guard/Forward
  • Notable Achievements:
    • AP and Sporting News All-American
    • Alabama’s first SEC Defensive Player of the Year
    • Leader of a Sweet 16 and SEC title team
    • One of the best defenders in school history

Jones belongs on the list because he defined one of Alabama’s best modern teams with two-way impact rather than pure scoring. Alabama says he became the first player in school history to win SEC Defensive Player of the Year and led the 2020-21 team in rebounds, assists, steals and blocks while helping the Tide win both the SEC regular-season and tournament titles. (Alabama Athletics)

10. T.R. Dunn

  • Years at Alabama: 1973–1977
  • Position: Guard
  • Notable Achievements:
    • First-team All-American
    • Freshman All-American
    • Three SEC titles
    • One of Alabama’s best rebounding guards ever

Dunn makes the top 10 because he was a major piece on a sustained winning run and brought unusual toughness and rebounding from the guard spot. Alabama says he earned national honors twice, played on three SEC title teams, and still ranks among the program’s best rebounding guards with 749 boards. (Alabama Athletics)

11. Erwin Dudley

  • Years at Alabama: 1999–2003
  • Position: Forward
  • Notable Achievements:
    • AP third-team All-American
    • SEC champion
    • Two-time SEC rebounding leader
    • Top-10 scorer and top-five rebounder in program history

Dudley has one of the strongest long-form production cases in modern Alabama history. Alabama says he led the Tide to 27 wins, an SEC title and a No. 8 final AP ranking in 2001-02, while finishing his career seventh in scoring and fourth in rebounding at the school. (Alabama Athletics)

12. Collin Sexton

  • Years at Alabama: 2017–2018
  • Position: Guard
  • Notable Achievements:
    • AP honorable mention All-American
    • AP Newcomer of the Year
    • Alabama freshman single-season scoring record holder at the time
    • One of the most electric one-year stars in school history

Sexton makes the list because his one season was too electric to ignore. Alabama says he became the first Crimson Tide rookie in program history to land on an AP All-America team, scored 632 points to set the school’s freshman single-season record at the time, and dropped 40 against Minnesota in one of the signature performances of the modern era. (Alabama Athletics)

Strong Honorable Mentions

  • James Robinson
  • Latrell Sprewell
  • Mo Williams
  • Kennedy Winston
  • Antonio McDyess
  • Ronald Steele

The toughest cuts were Robinson and Sprewell. Alabama’s official history credits Robinson with 1,813 points in only three seasons and notes that his 661 points in 1991-92 remain one of the best single-season totals in school history, while its centennial feature specifically name-checks Sprewell among the program figures most associated with Alabama basketball history.
