The 2021-22 season marked a historic milestone for the Ciudad de México Capitanes, who finally debuted in the NBA G League after earlier plans had been delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Rather than playing home games in Mexico City, the team operated from the United States for its inaugural G League campaign, creating an unusual introduction to life in the league. Under head coach Ramón Díaz, the Capitanes finished 4-10 in Showcase Cup play and featured a roster built around experienced international professionals and former NBA players. Alfonzo McKinnie was the team’s standout performer, providing high-level scoring and rebounding, while Matt Mooney, Jordan Howard, and Gary Clark brought additional professional experience. Although the results were modest, the season represented an important first step for the league’s first franchise based in Mexico and laid the groundwork for the organization’s future growth.
