The Washington Wizards have undergone several ownership changes since the franchise was founded in 1961. From its beginnings as the Chicago Packers to its current status as a Washington sports institution, each ownership era has helped shape the team’s direction and identity.
Abe Saperstein (1961–1964)
The franchise was established in 1961 as the Chicago Packers and was owned by Abe Saperstein, the founder of the Harlem Globetrotters. Saperstein was instrumental in securing the expansion franchise and guiding its early years.
The team later became the Chicago Zephyrs before relocating to Baltimore in 1963.
Earl Foreman (1964–1970)
Attorney and businessman Earl Foreman purchased the franchise after its move to Baltimore. During his ownership, the team became known as the Baltimore Bullets and began building a more competitive roster.
Abe Pollin (1964–2010)
Abe Pollin acquired a controlling interest in the franchise in 1964 and gradually became the team’s principal owner. Pollin oversaw the team’s relocation to the Washington metropolitan area and remained owner for more than four decades.
His tenure included the franchise’s greatest achievement, winning the NBA championship in 1978. Pollin also changed the team’s name from the Washington Bullets to the Washington Wizards in 1997 and became one of the NBA’s longest-serving owners.
Pollin Family Estate (2010)
Following Abe Pollin’s death in 2009, ownership briefly passed through his estate while arrangements were made for the sale of the franchise.
Ted Leonsis and Monumental Sports & Entertainment (2010–Present)
In 2010, businessman Ted Leonsis purchased the Wizards through Monumental Sports & Entertainment. Under his ownership, the organization has invested heavily in player development, facilities, and fan experience.
Leonsis has also overseen the Wizards as part of a broader sports portfolio that includes several professional teams in the Washington area. The franchise continues to pursue its first NBA Finals appearance since 1979.
