The South Bay Lakers’ 2019-20 season featured one of the most talented rosters in franchise history and demonstrated how closely the organization’s fortunes were tied to the Los Angeles Lakers. Dwight Howard, Rajon Rondo, Quinn Cook, and Jared Dudley all made assignment appearances during the year, giving South Bay a rare concentration of established NBA experience. At the same time, the team provided significant developmental minutes for younger players such as Devontae Cacok and Kostas Antetokounmpo, both of whom played important roles throughout the campaign. South Bay finished 19-24 before the season was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic, but the year remains notable for the unusual blend of NBA veterans, prospects, and assignment talent that moved through the roster. Few G League teams have ever featured such a direct connection to an NBA title contender, as many members of the Lakers’ eventual 2020 championship organization spent time on the South Bay roster.

HeatingUp Impact Index: Team Impact Spotlight

Player Name Role Tier MPG Usage Tier PPG RPG APG STK (SPG + BPG) Impact Index Notes Awards
Gary Payton II Two-Way Defensive Engine (1.1) 32.4 High [1.2] 21.4 9.5 6.8 4.2 110.62 A disruptive two-way creator who could turn defense into offense while also handling major playmaking duties. His 3.1 steals and 1.1 blocks reflected an unusually aggressive defensive presence, while a December three-game stretch produced 30.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and 10.0 assists per game. NBA.com G League Player of the Week (2019)
Devontae Cacok Pick-and-Roll Finisher (1.1) 23.9 High [1.2] 19.4 11.9 0.8 1.5 88.70 Cacok operated as a vertical interior threat, doing most of his damage around the rim as a powerful screener, roller and offensive rebounder. His touch was highly efficient, but his value came more from physical pressure and finishing than perimeter creation; his 2019-20 season earned First Team All-G League recognition. Sporting News All-NBA G League First Team (2020); NBA G League All-Rookie Team (2020)
Pierre Jackson Lead Shot Creator (1.1) 32.9 High [1.2] 20.8 4.1 6.1 1.9 86.86 Jackson functioned as a high-volume scoring point guard, capable of creating his own three-point looks while still directing the offense. His combination of 20.8 points and 6.1 assists shows how much of South Bay’s perimeter creation flowed through him, with the long-range shot giving his attack another dimension. ESPN
Talen Horton-Tucker Primary Wing Creator (1.1) 29.8 High [1.2] 18.1 6.1 4.0 2.0 79.73 Horton-Tucker was used as a big-bodied young creator rather than a stationary spot-up wing, attacking off the bounce and making plays for others. His 38 starts and nearly 30 minutes per game reflected genuine responsibility, while the 4.0 assists showed how often his possessions extended beyond scoring. Los Angeles Times
David Stockton Franchise Floor General (1.05) 26.4 High [1.2] 15.3 2.7 6.8 0.9 64.76 Stockton served as the team’s organizing point guard, using pick-and-roll reads and controlled pace to keep the offense moving. His value was less about physical scoring than decision-making and table-setting, and South Bay gave him enough responsibility to start 21 games. CBS Sports
Kostas Antetokounmpo Rim-Running Frontcourt Piece (1.05) 25.4 Medium [1.1] 14.1 7.8 1.6 2.2 59.37 Kostas provided a rangy interior presence built around rim runs, transition finishing and weak-side activity. He was still developing offensively, but his size and athleticism gave South Bay a useful vertical threat while also allowing him to contribute as a rebounder and shot blocker. Sports Illustrated
Travis Wear Stretch Forward (1.05) 30.6 Medium [1.1] 13.2 6.5 3.2 1.3 55.90 Wear worked as a spacing-oriented forward who could pull opposing bigs away from the paint while providing secondary passing and rebounding. His 5.0 three-point attempts per game kept that stretch element central to his offensive role, while 3.2 assists showed he was more than a catch-and-shoot outlet. The G League
Zach Norvell Jr. Perimeter Scoring Wing (1.05) 29.7 High [1.2] 15.2 4.5 3.0 1.1 54.98 Norvell supplied perimeter shot-making and secondary creation, with his 3.0 assists giving South Bay another ball-handler beside the primary guards. The nearly 40% three-point rate made him particularly useful as a floor-spacing option, and a February call-up to Golden State reflected his progress. NBA G League
Wayne Selden Bench Shot Creator (1.0) 26.5 High [1.2] 14.8 3.6 2.5 1.2 48.62 Selden brought veteran scoring punch from the perimeter, able to attack closeouts and create his own offense without needing to dominate every possession. His role was clearly that of an experienced reserve scorer, while his physical wing frame also allowed him to contribute on the glass and defensively. NBA.com
Jordan Caroline Energy Forward (1.0) 21.8 Medium [1.1] 11.6 8.1 2.5 1.0 46.40 Caroline played with a rugged, high-motor style, attacking the offensive glass and bringing physicality from the forward spot. His season was interrupted by injuries, but after returning he immediately produced double-doubles and remained a useful rebounding presence in limited action. CBS Sports
Reggie Hearn Movement Shooter (1.05) 31.1 Medium [1.1] 12.8 3.7 2.4 0.8 45.51 Hearn filled a spacing-heavy wing role while still carrying enough offensive responsibility to stay involved for long stretches. His 42.4% three-point shooting made him a valuable floor spacer, and the 31.1 minutes and 33 starts show how much South Bay relied on his perimeter presence. SB Nation
Demetrius Jackson Backup Point Guard (1.05) 26.5 Medium [1.1] 10.0 1.0 5.8 0.8 40.66 Jackson’s short South Bay stint centered on ball control and pick-and-roll orchestration rather than volume scoring. He generated 5.8 assists in limited appearances, giving the lineup another experienced creator before his G League contract ended in February. ESPN
Javan Felix Reserve Floor Organizer (1.0) 20.1 Medium [1.1] 8.6 1.9 3.3 0.9 29.40 Felix was primarily a second-unit organizer, using his compact guard game to get South Bay into sets and create shots for teammates. The modest scoring load paired with 3.3 assists points to a facilitator-first role rather than a featured offensive assignment. The G League
Andre Ingram Veteran Shooting Specialist (1.0) 23.9 Medium [1.1] 8.2 2.2 1.3 0.8 25.00 Ingram remained a specialist built around elite perimeter shooting and veteran floor spacing. His long professional experience gave South Bay a steady off-ball option, and his 46.6% three-point shooting in this sample reinforced that specialized value. Los Angeles Times
Marcus Allen Rotation Combo Guard (1.0) 19.7 Medium [1.1] 7.2 2.1 1.2 1.0 23.00 Allen supplied low-maintenance guard minutes, mixing spot-up opportunities with defensive activity and occasional secondary ball-handling. He appeared in 42 games, giving South Bay a dependable rotation option rather than a high-usage offensive role. The G League
Tyler Roberson Frontcourt Depth Piece (1.0) 8.0 Low [1.0] 2.0 1.5 0.0 1.0 9.00 Roberson’s South Bay sample was tiny, with his minutes primarily reflecting a depth role after arriving late in the season. His value came from size, rebounding instincts and occasional defensive activity rather than offensive involvement. The G League
Matt Kenyon Energy Reserve (1.0) 10.4 Low [1.0] 1.0 1.8 0.8 0.3 7.80 Kenyon was a low-minute developmental guard whose contribution centered on hustle, rebounding for his position and keeping the ball moving. The nine-game South Bay sample was too small for a broader role assessment. NBL
Daishon Smith Emergency Backcourt Reserve (1.0) 5.0 Low [1.0] 3.2 0.2 0.2 0.2 7.60 Smith saw only five games and five minutes per night, making this essentially an emergency-depth assignment. His three-point attempts suggest a spot-up role when he did enter, but the sample is too small for a broader evaluation. South Bay Lakers
Earnest Ross Tryout Wing Reserve (1.0) 4.8 Low [1.0] 1.8 1.3 0.3 0.0 6.80 Ross had a very small four-game sample after entering South Bay through the tryout route. His minutes were largely developmental and situational, leaving little evidence of a sustained rotation role. The G League
Nick Norton Emergency Point Guard (1.0) 10.5 Low [1.0] 0.0 0.5 1.5 0.0 4.00 Norton was used sparingly as a reserve ball-handler, with his limited minutes pointing toward an organizational depth role rather than a regular rotation assignment. The two-game sample makes any broader stylistic conclusion premature. South Bay Lakers
