Defensively, she was a steady perimeter presence who used positioning, length, and discipline well within team structure, while offensively she thrived as a primary scoring option built around footwork, balance, and elite touch from the mid-range, with enough handle to create her own look and enough feel to punish defenders who gave her rhythm. Physically, Augustus had a smooth, athletic guard-forward frame with good size for the wing, fluid movement, and the body control to rise comfortably over contests or finish in traffic. Scouting Report

I’ve always thought Seimone Augustus was one of the purest examples of a player who won possessions with balance rather than speed. Defenders often knew exactly where she wanted to get to, and it rarely mattered because her footwork consistently put them half a step behind. She lived in that space between the rim and the three-point line, gliding into pull-ups, fadeaways and one-dribble jumpers with remarkable body control, making difficult shots look routine because she arrived on balance every time. The interesting thing is that she didn’t need endless ball screens to create those looks. A simple pin-down, a curl into the lane or a catch at the elbow was often enough because she immediately read the defender’s momentum and attacked the opposite shoulder. When teams sent help, she made the uncomplicated read, swinging the ball or finding a cutter without holding it long enough for the defence to recover. Defensively, Augustus relied on anticipation more than disruption. She stayed attached through off-ball actions, understood when to switch onto bigger wings without giving away deep position and consistently arrived early enough on weak-side rotations to discourage easy finishes without gambling herself out of the play. The trade-off was that she wasn’t the type of creator who relentlessly collapsed an entire defence off the dribble every possession, so offences built entirely around high-volume pick-and-roll initiation didn’t maximise what she did best. To me, her ideal fit is in a motion-heavy offence with multiple handlers, where she can flow between staggered screens, DHOs, post-ups against smaller guards and secondary pick-and-rolls instead of carrying every possession from the top of the floor. That’s where her scoring rhythm becomes incredibly difficult to interrupt because every touch feels like a continuation of the previous action rather than an isolation. There are obvious similarities to DeMar DeRozan in the mastery of the mid-range and ability to manufacture clean looks without relying on the three-point line, while parts of her elegant footwork and patient scoring cadence also echo Allan Houston. Augustus never looked like she was rushing to beat the defence; she simply arrived at her spot before the defence realised it had already lost the possession.
