He can sprint into early offense, dive hard out of pick-and-rolls, or slip a ghost screen into open space before the defense has fully communicated, and that constant movement gives ball handlers an inviting target around the rim. He isn’t someone who consistently manufactures offense with advanced post moves or patient face-up creation, though. Most of his scoring comes from beating defenders to spots, finishing lobs, attacking closeouts with one or two decisive dribbles, or cleaning up possessions on the offensive glass. That’s the trade-off. When forced to slow down and create against a set defense, his decision-making can become rushed and his touch isn’t always reliable enough to bail him out. To me, there are flashes of a younger Kenneth Faried in the way he attacks loose balls and second-chance opportunities, while his defensive mobility and ability to guard multiple actions resemble an unfinished version of Jerami Grant as a frontcourt defender. What stands out is that Achiuwa’s best possessions usually come when he’s reacting instead of thinking. The less he has to manufacture, the more naturally his athletic tools take over.

I thought the Knicks did very well to land him in the trade along with OG Anunoby because I felt Achiuwa had the upside to become one of the greatest centers the Knicks have had since Ewing. 8/13/2024
