The Phoenix Mercury are one of the WNBA’s original franchises and have been among the league’s most successful teams since their debut in 1997. Throughout their history, the franchise has had relatively few ownership changes, benefiting from long periods of stability and investment.

Jerry Colangelo and the Phoenix Suns Ownership Group (1997–2004)

The Mercury were founded in 1997 as one of the WNBA’s inaugural teams and were owned by Jerry Colangelo and the Phoenix Suns ownership group.

As part of the Suns organization, the Mercury helped establish the WNBA in Arizona and built a loyal fan base during the league’s formative years.

Robert Sarver (2004–2023)

In 2004, businessman Robert Sarver purchased the Phoenix Suns and the Phoenix Mercury. During his ownership, the Mercury became one of the WNBA’s premier franchises.

The team won three WNBA championships in 2007, 2009, and 2014 behind stars such as Diana Taurasi, Cappie Pondexter, Penny Taylor, and Brittney Griner. The Mercury also became known for consistently ranking among the league’s attendance leaders and most recognizable brands.

Mat Ishbia and Justin Ishbia (2023–Present)

In 2023, brothers Mat Ishbia and Justin Ishbia acquired the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury in one of the largest transactions in professional basketball history.

Under the Ishbia-led ownership group, the Mercury have continued to invest in player resources, facilities, and organizational growth. The franchise remains one of the WNBA’s flagship teams and continues to build on a legacy that includes multiple championships and Hall of Fame players.
