The New York Liberty are one of the WNBA’s original franchises and among the league’s most recognizable teams. Since their founding in 1997, the franchise has experienced only a handful of ownership changes, with each era helping shape the growth of women’s professional basketball in New York.

Madison Square Garden Company (1997–2019)

The Liberty were established in 1997 as one of the WNBA’s inaugural teams and were owned by Madison Square Garden Company, the same organization that owned the NBA’s New York Knicks.

During this period, the Liberty became one of the league’s flagship franchises. Led by stars such as Teresa Weatherspoon, Becky Hammon, Vickie Johnson, and later Cappie Pondexter, the team made multiple WNBA Finals appearances and developed a passionate fan base in the New York market.

However, the franchise’s future became uncertain in the late 2010s as Madison Square Garden explored options to sell the team.

Joseph Tsai and Clara Wu Tsai (2019–Present)

In 2019, Brooklyn Nets owner Joseph Tsai purchased the New York Liberty. Shortly afterward, his wife Clara Wu Tsai became a key part of the ownership group, with the couple taking an active role in the franchise’s growth.

Under the Tsais’ ownership, the Liberty returned to prominence as one of the WNBA’s premier organizations. Significant investments were made in player resources, facilities, marketing, and operations. The franchise also moved full-time to Barclays Center, providing a permanent home in Brooklyn.

The Liberty reached new heights during the Tsai era, capturing the first WNBA championship in franchise history in 2024 and solidifying their position as one of the league’s marquee teams.
