Understanding basketball analytics can be challenging, especially when different websites use different formulas, classifications, and terminology.
The HeatingUp Impact Index was created to provide a transparent and easy-to-understand framework for evaluating player impact while still recognizing the context behind a player’s production.
This glossary explains the key terms used throughout the HeatingUp Impact Index system and serves as the official reference guide for readers interpreting Impact Index tables, rankings, player profiles, and leaderboards.
For the full formula and worked example, see the Impact Index calculation page.
HeatingUp Impact Index
The HeatingUp Impact Index is a proprietary weighted production metric developed by HeatingUp.
The framework combines:
- Points per game (PPG)
- Rebounds per game (RPG)
- Assists per game (APG)
- Steals plus blocks (STK)
- Usage Tier
- Role Tier
The goal is to provide a single comparative score that blends statistical production with basketball context.
The current formula is:
2 × (PPG + RPG + APG + STK) × Usage Factor × Role Factor
Higher scores indicate greater overall impact within the framework.
Impact Score
The Impact Score is the final numerical value generated by the HeatingUp Impact Index formula.
It represents a player’s weighted production after accounting for:
- Statistical output
- Offensive responsibility
- Team role
The score is intended as a comparative tool rather than a definitive measure of player quality.
Role Tier
Role Tier is a contextual adjustment that reflects a player’s on-court responsibilities within a team.
Role Tier does not measure talent alone.
Instead, it evaluates how important a player’s role is within the team’s overall structure.
Every player receives a basketball-specific role classification that is assigned to one of three weighting bands.
| Weighting Band | Multiplier |
|---|---|
| Supporting Role | 1.00 |
| Significant Rotation Role | 1.05 |
| Franchise-Level Responsibility | 1.10 |
Examples of Role Tier classifications include:
- Primary Offensive Engine
- Franchise Floor General
- Lead Shot Creator
- Offensive Focal Point
- Two-Way Superstar Wing
- Defensive Anchor
- Starting Two-Way Wing
- Secondary Offensive Creator
- Stretch Big
- Sixth Man Scorer
- Rotation Wing
- Backup Point Guard
- Defensive Utility Wing
- Energy Reserve
The role name explains the player’s function.
The multiplier reflects the level of responsibility attached to that function.
Role Factor
Role Factor is the numerical multiplier assigned through the Role Tier system.
Possible values are:
- 1.00
- 1.05
- 1.10
Role Factor is applied directly within the Impact Index formula.
Usage Tier
Usage Tier provides context for a player’s offensive workload.
Rather than using official Usage Percentage calculations, the HeatingUp Impact Index assigns players to broader categories based on offensive responsibility and season context.
The three Usage Tiers are:
| Usage Tier | Multiplier |
|---|---|
| Low Usage | 1.00 |
| Medium Usage | 1.10 |
| High Usage | 1.20 |
Usage Tier helps distinguish between players who produce similar statistics while carrying different offensive burdens.
Usage Factor
Usage Factor is the numerical multiplier associated with a player’s Usage Tier.
Possible values are:
- 1.00
- 1.10
- 1.20
The Usage Factor is applied directly within the Impact Index formula.
PPG (Points Per Game)
Points Per Game measures the average number of points a player scores each game.
PPG remains one of the largest contributors to the HeatingUp Impact Index but is evaluated alongside other forms of production.
RPG (Rebounds Per Game)
Rebounds Per Game measures the average number of rebounds a player records each game.
Both offensive and defensive rebounds are included.
RPG rewards players who consistently control possessions and extend opportunities for their teams.
APG (Assists Per Game)
Assists Per Game measures the average number of assists a player records each game.
APG recognizes playmaking, offensive creation, and the ability to generate scoring opportunities for teammates.
STK (Steals Plus Blocks)
STK is a combined defensive statistic used by the HeatingUp Impact Index.
The calculation is:
STK = Steals Per Game + Blocks Per Game
Example:
- 1.8 steals
- 0.9 blocks
STK = 2.7
The category rewards players who consistently create defensive events that disrupt possessions.
Offensive Responsibility
Offensive Responsibility refers to the level of offensive burden a player carries.
Factors may include:
- Shot creation
- Ball handling
- Playmaking duties
- Offensive initiation
- Scoring workload
- Defensive attention faced
Offensive Responsibility is one of the primary considerations when assigning Usage Tier.
Team Role
Team Role refers to a player’s actual basketball function within a team.
Examples include:
- Primary creator
- Defensive anchor
- Stretch big
- Sixth man scorer
- Floor spacer
- Rim protector
- Secondary playmaker
- Energy reserve
Team Role is the foundation of the Role Tier classification process.
Box-Score Production
Box-Score Production refers to the statistical categories directly included in the HeatingUp Impact Index formula:
- Points
- Rebounds
- Assists
- Steals
- Blocks
The HeatingUp Impact Index intentionally relies on publicly available box-score data so the methodology remains transparent and easy to verify.
Weighted Production Metric
A weighted production metric is a statistic that adjusts raw production using additional contextual factors.
The HeatingUp Impact Index is classified as a weighted production metric because it combines box-score output with Usage and Role adjustments.
Player Archetype
A player archetype is a broad description of a player’s style of play.
Examples include:
- Floor General
- Shot Creator
- Rim Protector
- Stretch Big
- Two-Way Wing
- Slasher
- Playmaking Forward
Player archetypes may help inform Role Tier assignments but are not part of the formula itself.
Supporting Role
Supporting Roles carry the lowest weighting band (1.00).
These players typically provide depth, specialist skills, or reserve contributions.
Examples include:
- Backup Point Guard
- Rotation Wing
- Energy Reserve
- Frontcourt Depth Piece
Significant Rotation Role
Significant Rotation Roles receive the middle weighting band (1.05).
These players consistently influence games and often serve as key parts of their team’s core rotation.
Examples include:
- Starting Two-Way Wing
- Secondary Offensive Creator
- Offensive Connector
- Stretch Big
- Defensive Anchor
Franchise-Level Responsibility
Franchise-Level Responsibilities receive the highest weighting band (1.10).
These players generally function as the primary focal points of their teams.
Examples include:
- Primary Offensive Engine
- Franchise Floor General
- Lead Shot Creator
- Offensive Focal Point
- Two-Way Superstar Wing
Proprietary Framework
The HeatingUp Impact Index is considered proprietary because the overall methodology was developed by HeatingUp.
This includes:
- The formula
- The Usage Tier framework
- The Role Tier classification system
- The weighting methodology
- The interpretation framework
While the formula itself is transparent, the complete evaluation system is unique to HeatingUp.
Why Definitions Matter
The HeatingUp Impact Index is designed to be transparent, repeatable, and easy to understand.
A shared vocabulary helps readers interpret rankings consistently, understand why players receive particular scores, and compare seasons across different leagues and eras.
As the HeatingUp Impact Index continues to evolve, this glossary will remain the central reference point for every major term used throughout the framework.
