Adrion Wall plays with the mindset of a scorer, but the interesting thing is that many of his best possessions begin without the ball in his hands. He has a feel for drifting behind penetration, relocating from the slot to the wing and arriving ready to shoot before the defense finishes its rotation, and that movement makes him more dangerous than if he simply waited for catch-and-shoot opportunities. When he does initiate, he’s more comfortable attacking an unsettled defender than breaking one down in isolation. He’ll use a change of pace out of a high pick-and-roll, get to his pull-up if the big retreats too far, or continue all the way to the rim if the lane stays open, but his efficiency can fluctuate when he’s forced into difficult self-created attempts against a loaded half-court defense. That’s the trade-off with his game. Defensively, he competes with active hands at the point of attack and does a good job jumping passing lanes when he can read the ball handler’s eyes, yet bigger, more physical wings can dislodge him and limit his ability to finish possessions with a clean contest. To me, his ideal role is as an off-ball scoring guard who can slide into secondary creation when the defense starts rotating, rather than carrying an offense possession after possession. Put him next to a primary playmaker who consistently bends the defense, and his shooting, timely cuts and willingness to attack closeouts become much more valuable because he spends less time trying to manufacture difficult looks. There are similarities to Max Abmas in the way he hunts scoring opportunities from multiple spots on the floor, while parts of his game also resemble Koby McEwen, relying on rhythm, movement and opportunistic drives more than overwhelming individual creation.
