The Golden State Valkyries are one of the newest franchises in the WNBA, joining the league as an expansion team in 2025. Unlike many WNBA teams that have changed hands over the years, the Valkyries have been owned by the same organization since their inception.

The Golden State Valkyries were awarded a WNBA expansion franchise in 2023 to an ownership group led by Joe Lacob and Peter Guber, the owners of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors.

The franchise was established through Golden State Entertainment, the business and entertainment division of the Warriors organization. Lacob and Guber spearheaded the effort to bring a WNBA team to the Bay Area, marking the region’s return to the league after the departure of the Sacramento Monarchs in 2009.

Under the same ownership structure as the Warriors, the Valkyries immediately became one of the WNBA’s most well-resourced expansion franchises. The organization benefits from shared access to Chase Center, extensive business operations, and one of the strongest ownership groups in professional basketball.
