The Utah Jazz have experienced only a few ownership changes since the franchise was founded in 1974. Long periods of stable ownership have helped the organization become one of the NBA’s most consistent franchises.

Sam Battistone Jr. (1974–1985)

The franchise was founded in 1974 as the New Orleans Jazz by businessman Sam Battistone Jr. Battistone owned the team during its early years and oversaw the franchise’s relocation to Salt Lake City in 1979, where it became the Utah Jazz.

Despite the move, the team retained the “Jazz” nickname and began establishing its identity in Utah.

Larry H. Miller (1985–2009)

In 1985, automotive entrepreneur Larry H. Miller purchased a majority stake in the Jazz. Under his ownership, the franchise became one of the NBA’s model organizations.

The Jazz enjoyed their most successful era during the 1990s, led by Hall of Famers John Stockton and Karl Malone. The team reached the NBA Finals in 1997 and 1998 and remained a perennial playoff contender throughout much of Miller’s tenure.

Larry H. Miller Family Trust (2009–2020)

Following Larry H. Miller’s death in 2009, ownership passed to the Larry H. Miller Family Trust. The Miller family continued operating the franchise and maintained the organization’s reputation for stability and community involvement.

Ryan Smith and Smith Entertainment Group (2020–Present)

In 2020, technology entrepreneur Ryan Smith purchased a majority interest in the Utah Jazz. The acquisition marked the first major ownership change in 35 years.

Under Smith’s leadership, the franchise has emphasized innovation, fan engagement, and long-term growth. The Jazz remain under the control of Smith Entertainment Group, which has expanded its presence in Utah sports and entertainment.
