The Toronto Raptors joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in 1995 and have had a relatively straightforward ownership history. Since the team’s founding, ownership has evolved from private investors to one of Canada’s largest sports and media companies.

John Bitove Ownership Group (1995–1998)

The Raptors were established in 1995 by a group led by Canadian businessman John Bitove. As the founding owner, Bitove played a central role in bringing an NBA franchise to Toronto and helping launch professional basketball in Canada.

During the franchise’s early years, the team played its home games at the SkyDome while plans were developed for a dedicated basketball arena.

Allan Slaight and Steve Stavro (1998)

In 1998, control of the Raptors shifted following a power struggle among the ownership group. Media executive Allan Slaight and businessman Steve Stavro gained control of the franchise, setting the stage for a new ownership structure.

Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (1998–Present)

Later in 1998, the Raptors became part of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), the company that also owns several major Toronto sports properties. Under MLSE ownership, the franchise experienced significant growth both on and off the court.

The MLSE era has included the team’s most successful period, highlighted by multiple playoff appearances and the franchise’s first NBA championship in 2019. The organization has also overseen major investments in Scotiabank Arena, player development, and the Raptors’ global brand.

Rogers Communications and BCE Inc. (2012–Present)

In 2012, telecommunications companies Rogers Communications and BCE Inc. acquired a majority stake in MLSE. Through their ownership of MLSE, the two companies became the ultimate controlling owners of the Toronto Raptors and continue to oversee the franchise today.
