Wisconsin men’s basketball has produced great players across very different eras. There were early championship-level teams, the stars who helped bring the Badgers back to national relevance in the 1990s, and the modern standouts who turned Wisconsin into a fixture deep in March. The program claims the 1941 NCAA title and has reached four Final Fours, which gives this legends list both old-school weight and modern star power. (Wisconsin Badgers)
1. Frank Kaminsky
- Years at Wisconsin: 2011–2015
- Position: Center
- Notable achievements:
- 2015 consensus National Player of the Year
- 2015 Wooden Award winner
- 2015 Naismith Trophy winner
- Consensus First-Team All-American
- Led Wisconsin to the 2015 national championship game and back-to-back Final Fours
Frank Kaminsky gets the top spot because no Wisconsin player reached a higher college peak. He became the first Badger to sweep the major national player of the year awards, turned into one of the best offensive big men in the country, and anchored the team that came closest to winning a modern-era national title. His mix of production, awards and team success is hard to beat. (Wisconsin Badgers)
2. Alando Tucker
- Years at Wisconsin: 2003–2007
- Position: Forward
- Notable achievements:
- Wisconsin all-time leading scorer with 2,217 points
- 2007 Big Ten Player of the Year
- Consensus First-Team All-American in 2007
- Led Wisconsin to a then-school record 30 wins in 2006–07
Alando Tucker has a real argument for No. 1, because he finished as Wisconsin’s all-time leading scorer and delivered one of the greatest senior seasons in school history. He gave the Badgers high-end scoring, durability and star power, and he became the program’s first consensus first-team All-American since John Kotz in 1942. That is rare company in Madison. (Wisconsin Badgers)
3. Michael Finley
- Years at Wisconsin: 1991–1995
- Position: Guard/Forward
- Notable achievements:
- Former Wisconsin all-time leading scorer with 2,147 points
- Three-time All-Big Ten selection
- Helped lead Wisconsin to the 1994 NCAA tournament, its first appearance since 1947
- UW Athletic Hall of Fame member
Michael Finley ranks this high because he was central to Wisconsin’s revival. Before the Badgers became a regular tournament program, Finley was the player who helped pull them back onto the national map. He was a major scorer, a high-level all-around wing, and one of the most important bridge figures in program history. (Wisconsin Badgers)
4. Devin Harris
- Years at Wisconsin: 2001–2004
- Position: Guard
- Notable achievements:
- 2004 Big Ten Player of the Year
- 2004 consensus Second-Team All-American
- Helped lead Wisconsin to Big Ten titles in 2002 and 2003
- Led Wisconsin to the 2004 Big Ten tournament title
Devin Harris gave Wisconsin one of its best lead guards ever. He had speed, shot creation, control and big-game presence, and he was the engine of some excellent Bo Ryan teams. His individual honors were elite, and his role in keeping Wisconsin at the top of the Big Ten makes him a clear legends pick. (Wisconsin Badgers)
5. Ethan Happ
- Years at Wisconsin: 2015–2019
- Position: Forward
- Notable achievements:
- Two-time All-American
- First three-time First-Team All-Big Ten selection in school history
- 2019 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award winner
- Wisconsin career leader in rebounds and blocks
Ethan Happ belongs in the top five because his résumé is massive. He was not just productive; he was one of the most unusual and effective all-around big men in college basketball during his era. His rebounding, passing, post scoring and defensive impact made him a rare centerpiece, and his place near the top of multiple career categories strengthens the case even more. (Wisconsin Badgers)
6. Sam Dekker
- Years at Wisconsin: 2012–2015
- Position: Forward
- Notable achievements:
- 2015 NCAA West Regional Most Outstanding Player
- Key starter on back-to-back Final Four teams
- Helped lead Wisconsin to the 2015 national championship game
- Second-Team All-Big Ten in 2015
Sam Dekker earns this spot because he was one of the faces of Wisconsin’s best modern stretch. He rose to another level in the 2015 NCAA tournament and became a huge reason the Badgers broke through to the title game. His postseason run alone makes him one of the more memorable players in school history. (Wisconsin Badgers)
7. Johnny Davis
- Years at Wisconsin: 2020–2022
- Position: Guard
- Notable achievements:
- 2022 consensus First-Team All-American
- 2022 Big Ten Player of the Year
- 2022 Lute Olson National Player of the Year
- Led Wisconsin to a share of the 2022 Big Ten regular-season title
Johnny Davis did not have the longest Wisconsin career, but his peak was outstanding. His sophomore season was one of the best single-year performances any Badger has produced, and he carried a major offensive load while turning himself into one of the top players in the country. When a player reaches first-team All-American level at Wisconsin, that always carries real weight. (Wisconsin Badgers)
8. Tracy Webster
- Years at Wisconsin: 1991–1994
- Position: Guard
- Notable achievements:
- Wisconsin career assists leader with 501
- Three-time All-Big Ten honoree
- Helped guide Wisconsin to the 1994 NCAA tournament
- UW Athletic Hall of Fame member
Tracy Webster was one of the key players in Wisconsin’s early-1990s turnaround. He gave the program steady guard play, playmaking and leadership, and his assist record still stands as one of the biggest markers of his value. He may not be the flashiest name on this list, but his role in shifting the program’s direction matters a lot. (Wisconsin Badgers)
9. Rashard Griffith
- Years at Wisconsin: 1991–1995
- Position: Center
- Notable achievements:
- Frontcourt anchor on Wisconsin’s 1994 NCAA tournament team
- One of the most important interior players in the program’s 1990s resurgence
- Posted 22 points and 15 rebounds in Wisconsin’s 1994 NCAA tournament win over Cincinnati
Rashard Griffith deserves a place because Wisconsin’s 1990s breakthrough was not just about guards and wings. He gave the Badgers size, scoring and rebounding, and he delivered one of the signature tournament performances of that era. He is one of the major names from the team that helped wake the program back up. (Wisconsin Badgers)
10. Butch Lee
- Years at Wisconsin: 1974–1978
- Position: Guard
- Notable achievements:
- One of the best guards of Wisconsin’s pre-modern era
- Finished with more than 1,200 career points
- Later became a first-round NBA Draft pick and NBA champion
Butch Lee rounds out the top 10 because Wisconsin legends should not begin in the 1990s. He was one of the best Badgers of the 1970s, a high-level college guard and a player whose reputation held up beyond Madison. Including him keeps this list from becoming too era-specific and gives proper weight to a standout older star. (Wisconsin Badgers)
Honorable mentions
- Jon Leuer
- Michael Flowers
- Brian Butch
- Nigel Hayes
- Mike Kelley
Jon Leuer was one of Wisconsin’s most skilled forwards, Michael Flowers was a major scorer in the early 2000s, Brian Butch was a key piece of strong Badger teams, Nigel Hayes helped lead back-to-back Final Four runs, and Mike Kelley remains one of the better all-around guards in school history.
