Jamal Mashburn’s player archetype was that of a scoring wing: a big, ball-skilled forward who could create his own shot, handle secondary playmaking duties, and punish mismatches from the perimeter or the mid-post. Defensively, he was more of a sturdy positional wing than a true stopper, using his frame and feel to hold up against forwards without being the kind of player a team built its scheme around; offensively, he operated as a primary or secondary scorer who could attack off the dribble, work in isolation, hit pull-ups, get to the line, and later stretch the floor as his three-point game developed. At 6-foot-8 and 247 pounds, Mashburn had unusual size for a creator, and his play style blended strength, smooth handle, face-up scoring, and patient shot-making in a way that made him one of the more versatile offensive forwards of his era. ARCHIVES
Jamal Mashburn had a great offensive game for a small forward. He could shoot from outside, had a very good mid-range game, and was a very good passer. Mashburn played for the Miami Heat alongside Tim Hardaway and Alonzo Mourning. Hardaway and Mourning were very good, but I don’t think the public appreciates Mashbourne’s importance to that team’s success.
Tracy McGrady said in an interview with Kevin Garnett on All This Smoke that Jamal Mashburn was one of the most underrated players. When I watched Mashburn’s tape, I saw a lot of T-Mac in his game: a taller player with backcourt skills and an ability to create his own shot who also has great footwork and likes to create his own shot, not just by driving, but by using footwork around the key and in the midrange.
