Villanova women’s basketball has a richer history than a lot of people realize. A real legends list here has to balance raw production with peak dominance, national recognition, postseason impact, and whether a player left a mark big enough to shape the program’s identity. That is especially important at Villanova, where different eras produced different kinds of stars, from all-around guards to high-volume scorers to players whose jersey numbers ended up retired. (Villanova University)

1. Maddy Siegrist

  • Years with Villanova: 2019–2023
  • Position: Forward
  • Notable achievements:
    • Villanova all-time leading scorer
    • Villanova all-time leading rebounder
    • 2022-23 national scoring leader
    • 2023 BIG EAST Player of the Year

Maddy Siegrist gets the top spot because she reset the standard for modern Villanova greatness. She became the all-time leading scorer in Villanova basketball history, men’s or women’s, when she broke Shelly Pennefather’s longstanding record in January 2023, and her Villanova bio also lists her as the school’s all-time leading rebounder. Add in the fact that she led the nation in scoring in 2022-23 and fronted a 30-win team that reached the Sweet 16, and her case for No. 1 is the cleanest on the board. (Villanova University)

2. Shelly Pennefather

  • Years with Villanova: 1983–1987
  • Position: Forward
  • Notable achievements:
    • Former Villanova all-time leading scorer
    • Former Villanova all-time leading rebounder
    • 1987 Wade Trophy winner
    • Villanova retired jersey

Shelly Pennefather has a legitimate argument for first because her peak was historic. Villanova notes that she finished with 2,408 points and 1,171 rebounds, was the program’s first women’s basketball All-American, won the 1987 Wade Trophy, and had her jersey retired. Before Siegrist came along, Pennefather stood as the gold standard for decades, and even now she remains one of the most accomplished players the school has ever produced. (Villanova University)

3. Trish Juhline

  • Years with Villanova: 1999–2003
  • Position: Guard
  • Notable achievements:
    • Villanova career record holder in three-pointers made
    • Villanova retired jersey
    • Helped lead Villanova to an Elite Eight
    • Three NCAA tournament appearances

Trish Juhline ranks this high because she combined winning, shot-making, and long-term program significance. Villanova states that she helped the Wildcats go 85-41, reach three NCAA tournaments, win a Big East championship, and make an Elite Eight, while also finishing with 1,659 career points and the school record for career three-pointers made. When a player’s number is retired and her teams made that kind of noise nationally, she belongs near the top tier. (Villanova University)

4. Denise Dillon

  • Years with Villanova: 1992–1996
  • Position: Guard/Forward
  • Notable achievements:
    • First-team All-BIG EAST selection
    • Three-time first-team All-Big Five
    • 1,355 career points
    • Villanova Varsity Club Hall of Fame member

Denise Dillon makes the top five because she was one of Villanova’s most complete pre-2000 stars and later became the coach who led the program back to national relevance. As a player, Villanova says she earned Big East postseason honors all four years, totaled 1,355 points, 677 rebounds, 228 assists, and 193 steals, and became one of only four players in school history at the time with at least 1,300 points, 600 rebounds, and 200 assists. That kind of all-around résumé gives her a stronger legends case than a simple scoring rank might suggest. (Villanova University)

5. Laura Kurz

  • Years with Villanova: 2007–2009
  • Position: Forward
  • Notable achievements:
    • 1,000 points in two seasons
    • One of the fastest 1,000-point scorers in program history
    • High-level frontcourt scorer
    • Key figure on strong late-2000s teams

Laura Kurz did not have four full Villanova seasons, but her impact was huge. Villanova credits her with 1,064 points in just 66 games, making her only the second player in program history to score 1,000 points in two seasons, and notes that she averaged 16.1 points per game in a Wildcat uniform. The mix of scoring volume and efficiency in such a short stretch makes her one of the most dangerous forwards Villanova has had. (Villanova University)

6. Lucy Olsen

  • Years with Villanova: 2022–2024
  • Position: Guard
  • Notable achievements:
    • Honorable Mention All-American
    • Unanimous first-team All-BIG EAST
    • BIG EAST Most Improved Player
    • Top-10 scorer in program history

Lucy Olsen belongs in the top 10 because her peak was elite, even if it was brief compared to some others on this list. Villanova says she finished her career ninth in school history in scoring with 1,504 points, averaged 23.3 points per game in 2023-24, ranked third nationally in scoring, and earned honorable mention All-America recognition from both the WBCA and AP. She was one of the most explosive guards the program has seen in years. (Villanova University)

7. Nancy Bernhardt

  • Years with Villanova: 1980–1984
  • Position: Guard/Forward
  • Notable achievements:
    • One of Villanova’s earliest 2,000-point scorers
    • Villanova retired jersey
    • Longtime all-time scoring leader near the top of program history
    • Major early-era program builder

Nancy Bernhardt has to be here because she was one of the pillars of the program’s first big era. A Villanova game note from 2000 listed her with 2,018 career points, and the school later confirmed that her number was retired, joining only a very small group of women’s basketball players to receive that honor at the time. That combination of production and historical stature makes her impossible to leave out. (Villanova University)

8. Lisa Ortlip

  • Years with Villanova: 1978–1982
  • Position: Forward
  • Notable achievements:
    • Retired jersey
    • Early 1,600-point scorer
    • Important figure in Villanova’s early national growth
    • One of the program’s foundational stars

Lisa Ortlip belongs on the list because she is one of the foundational names in Villanova women’s basketball history. Villanova’s retired players page includes her among the few women’s basketball players with retired numbers, and older Villanova notes listed her with 1,634 career points. For a program with long history, retired-jersey status carries real weight, especially for players who helped build the standard before the modern era. (Villanova University)

9. Kathie Beisel

  • Years with Villanova: 1979–1983
  • Position: Guard
  • Notable achievements:
    • Retired jersey
    • 1,300-point scorer
    • Important early-era standout
    • One of the most honored players in program history

Kathie Beisel earns a place because legends lists should not ignore the players whose stature inside the program clearly lasted. Villanova retired her number, and older program notes listed her among the top scorers in school history with 1,328 career points. She may not have the same name recognition now as later stars, but retired numbers usually tell you exactly who the school considers program-defining. (Villanova University)

10. Lisa Angelotti

  • Years with Villanova: 1984–1988
  • Position: Forward
  • Notable achievements:
    • Retired jersey
    • Longtime top-five scorer in school history
    • Key player from a strong late-1980s era
    • One of Villanova’s most honored forwards

Lisa Angelotti rounds out the top 10 because she checks the two biggest boxes for this range of the list: production and institutional legacy. Villanova retired her jersey, and an older school note listed her with 1,622 career points, which kept her high on the all-time scoring ladder. She may not have the national awards of Pennefather or Siegrist, but she is plainly one of the program’s enduring greats. (Villanova University)

Honorable mentions

  • Stacie Witman
  • Nikki Benedix
  • Michele Thornton
  • Jenn Beisel

Stacie Witman was one of Villanova’s better perimeter scorers of the 2000s, while Nikki Benedix later reached the Varsity Club Hall of Fame. Michele Thornton and Jenn Beisel also show up prominently in older Villanova career scoring notes, which is enough to keep them in the broader legends conversation even if they fall just outside the top 10 here.
