The Jazz concluded the 1980–81 season with a 28–54 record, finishing 5th in the Midwest Division and 11th in the Western Conference, thereby missing the playoffs.

Notably, Adrian Dantley led the league in scoring, averaging 30.7 points per game, and earned All-NBA Second Team honors. Rookie Darrell Griffith made a significant impact, averaging 20.6 points per game and earning the NBA Rookie of the Year award.
