Fun Facts

  • He was the only player in the 1999 NBA Draft class to make it to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
  • He made it cool to come off the bench (at least for a while). Ginobili was one of the first NBA players to come off the bench in a 6th man role without it being because he didn’t deserve to be in the starting five. He definitely was the third-best player on the team and his coach, Gregg Popovich, preferred using him off the bench for the sake of balancing the lineup and getting very good production from the bench.
  • In the matchup between the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets on December 9, 2004, Ginobili inbounded the ball after a timeout incorrectly. His coach pulled him from the game to have words. Arguably, without this mishap, Tracy McGrady wouldn’t have gone on to score 13 in the last 33 seconds of the game in a comeback victory for the Rockets.
