The Los Angeles Sparks are one of the WNBA’s original franchises and have been among the league’s most successful teams since their debut in 1997. Over the years, the franchise has transitioned through several ownership groups while maintaining a strong presence in the Los Angeles sports landscape.

Jerry Buss and Los Angeles Lakers Ownership (1997–2006)

The Sparks were founded in 1997 as one of the WNBA’s inaugural teams and were owned by Jerry Buss, the owner of the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers. Under Buss’ ownership, the Sparks became one of the league’s first dynasties.

Led by Lisa Leslie, the team won back-to-back WNBA championships in 2001 and 2002 and established itself as one of the league’s premier franchises.

Williams Group Holdings (2006–2014)

In 2006, the Sparks were sold to Williams Group Holdings, an investment group led by Carla Christofferson and Kathy Goodman. The ownership group kept the franchise in Los Angeles during a period of uncertainty for several WNBA teams and continued to support the organization’s growth.

Magic Johnson and Guggenheim Partners Ownership Group (2014)

In early 2014, a group led by Magic Johnson and Guggenheim Partners acquired the Sparks. The ownership transition was brief but helped position the franchise for its next chapter.

Sparks LA Sports, LLC (2014–Present)

Later in 2014, the franchise was purchased by Sparks LA Sports, LLC, a group led by entrepreneurs Mark Walter and Eric Holoman. The ownership group also included Magic Johnson among its investors.

Under this ownership structure, the Sparks returned to championship form, winning the 2016 WNBA title behind stars Candace Parker, Nneka Ogwumike, and Alana Beard. The organization has remained one of the WNBA’s flagship franchises and continues to be a major force in women’s professional basketball.
