The Los Angeles D-Fenders’ 2006-07 season marked the debut of both the franchise and the NBA Development League’s first direct single-team ownership model, with the club operating as an extension of the Los Angeles Lakers. As an expansion team, the D-Fenders spent much of the year establishing an identity while balancing player development with on-court competitiveness. Veteran guard Von Wafer emerged as one of the league’s most prolific scorers and earned an NBA call-up, while forward Andre Patterson and center Devin Green were among the team’s other key contributors. The D-Fenders finished 23-27 and narrowly missed the playoffs, but the inaugural season demonstrated the potential of the Lakers’ affiliate experiment and helped lay the groundwork for what would become a common organizational structure throughout the G League.

Regular Season

PLAYER NAME ROLE TIER MPG USAGE TIER PPG RPG APG STK (SPG + BPG) IMPACT INDEX NOTES AWARDS
Devin Green Primary Wing Engine (1.1) 39.2 High 19.5 4.8 4.2 2.5 81.84 A high-volume wing scorer who also carried real creation duties, Green opened the D-Fenders’ inaugural season as their leading offensive option before leaving for Germany. His combination of downhill scoring, playmaking and active hands made the 6-foot-7 guard more than a pure scorer. Loss of Odom is taking its toll N/A
Sean Banks Slashing Forward Creator (1.1) 30.1 High 18.5 4.2 3.0 1.2 71.02 Banks functioned as a scoring forward who could attack from the wing, punish smaller defenders and create his own pull-up game. The D-Fenders gave him enough offensive freedom to become a major half-court option, with his size allowing him to rebound and finish through contact. ABCD Camp Chatter: Thursday N/A
Nick Vander Laan Rebounding Interior Hub (1.05) 31.2 High 12.6 12.4 1.4 1.4 70.06 Vander Laan was essentially an emergency interior centerpiece, arriving late in the season and immediately supplying size, rebounding and passing from the middle. The five-game sample is tiny, but his 12.4 rebounds and willingness to facilitate from the frontcourt clearly changed the team’s interior balance. Nick VanderLaan player profile N/A
Brian Chase Lead Perimeter Shot Maker (1.1) 35.1 High 16.2 4.0 3.8 1.5 67.32 Chase was the D-Fenders’ primary perimeter organizer and shooting threat, combining deep range with enough ball-handling to keep the offense moving. His 43.7% three-point shooting and 35.1 minutes reflected how heavily the inaugural club leaned on him, and his All-Star selection reinforced that central role. HEAT Sign D-League Star Brian Chase D-League All-Star (2007); All D-League Honorable Mention (2007)
Jordan Farmar NBA Assignment Floor General (1.05) 31.7 High 14.7 2.7 5.7 2.0 63.25 Farmar’s tiny sample was designed around restoring rhythm and giving the rookie sustained ball-handling responsibility. He immediately operated as a true lead guard, and his 5.7 assists show why the assignment was about decision-making and confidence as much as scoring. Farmar could play two today N/A
Andre Emmett Physical Scoring Wing (1.05) 29.1 High 15.6 5.2 2.0 1.3 60.73 Emmett brought a physical scoring style to the wing, comfortable attacking the basket and using his strength around the paint rather than relying heavily on perimeter shooting. That approach carried over from his Texas Tech profile, where he was viewed as a player capable of creating his own shots and posting up smaller defenders. Hamilton happy to be back in ‘Madness’ N/A
Andre Patterson Two-Way Frontcourt Anchor (1.05) 32.2 Medium 10.5 7.2 2.0 2.6 51.51 Patterson’s value came from doing the dirty frontcourt work: attacking the glass, finishing efficiently and protecting the rim. His 1.6 blocks and 1.0 steal show a defender who affected possessions in several ways rather than simply occupying the paint. Andre Patterson minor league profile N/A
T.J. Cummings Interior Scoring Forward (1.05) 25.6 High 12.5 4.9 1.3 0.6 48.64 Cummings arrived as an experienced D-League scorer and immediately gave Los Angeles a reliable interior option. His strength around the basket and familiarity with the league helped stabilize the frontcourt after his December acquisition, although his role was more scoring-oriented than defensive. D-Fenders Acquire T.J. Cummings, Waive Duane Erwin N/A
Aloysius Anagonye Starting Defensive Big (1.05) 27.9 Medium 10.2 5.7 1.4 1.7 43.89 Anagonye served as a dependable starting big whose main value was physical interior play, rebounding and defensive activity. His 1.2 steals for a frontcourt player suggest an unusually active defensive approach, while his role remained largely complementary offensively. Aloysius Anagonye PF/C profile N/A
Akin Akingbala Rim-Protecting Interior Presence (1.05) 22.2 Medium 7.6 6.8 1.1 2.0 40.43 Akingbala’s short D-Fenders stint was built around his physical interior game and shot-blocking instincts. He had already developed into a much more assertive rebounder and finisher at Clemson, and that late-college development translated naturally into a defensive-oriented professional role. Clemson center Akin Akingbala picked up by Boston Celtics N/A
Jackie Manuel Defensive Wing Specialist (1.05) 28.8 Medium 9.5 3.8 1.8 1.5 38.35 Manuel remained a defense-first wing whose offensive responsibilities were secondary to perimeter containment and connective play. His background as a celebrated defensive specialist at North Carolina made him a natural lineup stabilizer even when his scoring was modest. Carolina Basketball 2005-06 Review N/A
Wesley Wilson Interior Reserve Big (1.0) 20.8 Medium 9.0 4.1 0.9 1.7 34.54 Wilson supplied traditional center minutes, relying on size, interior finishing and rim protection rather than stretching the floor. His 1.0 block in limited minutes points to a useful defensive presence, but his role was clearly more situational than foundational. Four D-League Teams Make Player Moves N/A
Chet Mason Defensive Connector Guard (1.05) 20.7 Medium 7.6 3.6 1.6 1.1 32.11 Mason functioned as a low-maintenance two-way guard, capable of defending, moving the ball and filling gaps without needing the offense built around him. His modest scoring load fits a connector role more than a traditional scoring-guard assignment. Los Angeles D-Fenders vs Sioux Falls Skyforce Feb. 9, 2007 N/A
Nick Lewis Mobile Frontcourt Reserve (1.0) 24.3 Medium 7.6 5.0 0.8 0.9 31.46 Lewis entered the rotation as a mobile 6-foot-10 frontcourt option after playing professionally in Belgium. He offered enough scoring touch to avoid being purely defensive, but the D-Fenders mainly used him as a complementary interior piece rather than a featured offensive hub. D-Fenders Acquire Nick Lewis and Daniel Horton N/A
Kevin Johnson Energy Frontcourt Reserve (1.0) 18.2 Medium 8.4 2.4 1.7 0.6 28.82 Johnson’s role was that of an active reserve forward, providing competent finishing and occasional defensive activity without demanding many possessions. His selection in the D-League expansion draft reflected the need for dependable frontcourt depth rather than a featured scorer. D-Fenders Announce Expansion Draft Selections N/A
Gary Hamilton Rebounding Center Reserve (1.0) 24.1 Low 4.7 5.2 2.0 2.2 28.20 Hamilton was an unusual low-scoring center because his defensive activity outweighed his offensive responsibility. His college profile already showed a player who generated value through rebounding and interior defense, which carried naturally into this limited D-Fenders assignment. Hurricanes To Host Maryland N/A
Daniel Horton Reserve Pick-and-Roll Guard (1.0) 21.8 Low 5.7 1.9 2.9 1.2 23.40 Horton provided secondary ball-handling and playmaking after joining the D-Fenders late in the season. His 2.9 assists in limited minutes suggest that the guard’s clearest contribution was organizing possessions rather than forcing his own offense. Daniel Horton minor league profile N/A
Robert Dryden Deep-Coverage Center (1.0) 15.5 Low 4.0 5.0 1.0 1.5 23.00 Dryden’s role was narrowly defined around size, rebounding and interior coverage. With only two appearances, this is a very small sample, but the available minutes point toward a depth-center assignment rather than a sustained rotation role. D-League announces expansion draft results N/A
Duane Erwin Shot-Blocking Frontcourt Specialist (1.0) 15.3 Low 3.0 3.8 0.7 2.1 19.20 Erwin’s early-season role centered on interior defense and rim protection. He started the first three games before his minutes fell sharply, making his 1.4 blocks especially representative of the defensive niche he offered before being waived. D-Fenders Acquire T.J. Cummings, Waive Duane Erwin N/A
Joshua Gross Floor-Spreading Reserve Forward (1.0) 14.4 Low 5.8 1.4 0.4 0.7 16.60 Gross operated as a depth forward with some perimeter shooting ability, giving the rotation a little more spacing than its traditional interior players. His 40% three-point shooting on limited attempts hints at that complementary floor-spacing function. D-Fenders Announce Expansion Draft Selections N/A
Andre Joseph Emergency Backcourt Starter (1.0) 27.5 Low 4.0 0.5 2.5 1.0 16.00 Joseph’s sample is extremely small, but he opened the franchise’s inaugural game as part of the original starting lineup. The limited appearances make it difficult to establish a broader role beyond brief ball-handling and perimeter support. Team History N/A
Jason McKrieth Transitional Reserve Wing (1.0) 13.4 Low 3.1 2.1 1.4 0.9 15.00 McKrieth arrived after Devin Green’s departure and was essentially a roster-transition piece. His college background as an all-conference scorer suggested more offensive potential than the tiny D-Fenders sample ultimately allowed him to demonstrate. D-Fenders Acquire Jason McKrieth N/A
John Gilchrist Backup Lead Guard (1.0) 15.2 Low 3.6 1.5 1.2 0.9 14.40 Gilchrist was a late-season depth guard brought in after a turbulent stretch overseas. His athleticism and prior reputation as an attacking point guard made him useful as a secondary creator, but his short D-Fenders stint never developed into a major offensive role. D-Fenders Acquire John Gilchrist N/A
Jeremee McGuire Emergency Frontcourt Depth (1.0) 8.2 Low 1.7 2.3 0.5 0.7 10.40 McGuire saw only a handful of minutes before being waived, so the sample supports little more than a depth-frontcourt classification. His primary function was to absorb interior minutes when the roster required another big body. Transactions: NBA Development League N/A
Babacar Camara Late-Season Interior Stopper (1.0) 10.7 Low 1.7 1.8 1.3 0.0 9.60 Camara arrived very late in the season after a productive stretch in China’s CBA, where his rebounding had been a major part of his value. With only six D-Fenders appearances, however, the sample is too small to suggest more than brief interior depth. D-Fenders Acquire Babacar Camara N/A
