The Knicks and Timberwolves completed a trade that sent Karl-Anthony Towns to the Knicks for Julius Randle. This trade is all the Knicks could have asked for and more. They have been trying to move Randle. Also, they have needed a legitimate center for many years, especially since Brunson arrived. Mitchel Robinson is unreliable with his injury history. Moreover, the Knicks have a perfectly legit power forward already in Precious Achiuwa. This trade means the Knicks have shuffled their pieces to be considerably stronger and they’re a better team now because of it. That isn’t to say that the trade is bad for the Timberwolves: they had their own dilemma where they weren’t getting the most out of their starting five. They too have become stronger. One could argue that Karl-Anthony Towns is a better player than Julius Randle and that the Knicks won the deal. However, the trade does allow the Timberwolves to no longer have to play with 2 centers, which, regardless of what it means for the Knicks, means that the Timberwolves do get good compensation overall. Donte DiVincenzo is another player that the Timberwolves acquired in the deal, and he’ll also give the Timberwolves the added depth off the bench they need. Notably, Karl-Anthony Towns lost his mother recently. You’ll never hear the media talk about these things but they would be taken into consideration when it comes to assessing his likely future value. Would an owner think a player is going to continue getting better after losing a mother? No. They’re going to assume that the player has peaked and will explore more important things in life than playing basketball. 09/13/2024
