During his freshman year (2003–04), Paul averaged 14.8 points, 5.9 assists, and 2.7 steals per game, setting school freshman records for three-point percentage, free throws, free throw percentage, assists, and steals. His performance earned him the ACC Rookie of the Year and Third Team All-ACC honors.

In his sophomore season (2004–05), he improved his averages to 15.3 points, 6.6 assists, and 2.4 steals per game. Notably, for two weeks early in that season, Wake Forest was ranked number one in the nation for the first time in school history.

After two standout seasons, Paul declared for the 2005 NBA Draft and was selected 4th overall by the New Orleans Hornets.
