The Atlanta Dream entered the WNBA as an expansion franchise in 2008 and have experienced several ownership changes throughout their history. Each ownership group has played a role in shaping the team’s growth, culminating in a new era focused on long-term success both on and off the court.
Ron Terwilliger and Atlanta Dream, LLC (2008–2010)
The Atlanta Dream were founded in 2008 by a group led by real estate developer Ron Terwilliger. As the franchise’s founding owner, Terwilliger helped bring WNBA basketball back to Atlanta and establish the Dream as the league’s newest expansion team.
Mary Brock and Kelly Loeffler (2011–2021)
In 2011, businesswomen Mary Brock and Kelly Loeffler acquired the franchise. During their ownership, the Dream reached multiple WNBA Finals appearances and became one of the league’s more competitive teams.
However, the ownership group became the subject of significant controversy in the late 2010s, ultimately leading to the sale of the franchise.
Larry Gottesdiener, Suzanne Abair, and Renee Montgomery (2021–Present)
In 2021, an ownership group led by real estate executive Larry Gottesdiener purchased the Atlanta Dream. The group also included Northland executive Suzanne Abair and former Dream player Renee Montgomery.
Montgomery became the first former WNBA player to serve as both an owner and executive of a WNBA franchise. Under this ownership group, the Dream have focused on organizational growth, player investment, and strengthening their presence within the Atlanta community.
