Amen Thompson’s player archetype is that of a jumbo two-way playmaking wing who bends games with burst, length, and defensive chaos more than polished half-court scoring. Defensively, he projects and already performs like a multi-positional stopper, able to pressure ball-handlers, switch across spots, jump passing lanes, and use his range and recovery speed to blow up actions on and off the ball. Offensively, his best work comes as a downhill creator, transition attacker, cutter, secondary initiator, and connective passer rather than a pure shot-making engine, with his rim pressure and feel doing more damage than his jumper at this stage. Physically, he brings rare tools for a guard-forward at roughly 6-foot-7 with a 7-foot wingspan, plus elite explosiveness and open-floor speed. His play style is dynamic, disruptive, and highly versatile, built on constant pressure, instinctive reads, and the kind of athletic pop that lets him impact possessions even when he is not dominating the ball. Player Overview: Amen Thompson entered the NBA at the same time as twin brother Ausar Thompson. That’s about where their similarities ended with basketball. Amen was drafted by Houston in the West and Asur by the Pistons in the East. Amen is a backcourt player while Ausar is a frontcourt player. Between the two of them, most people I’ve read think Amen has the most upside. However, I think Ausar has more upside because their bodies are better suited to the front court in my opinion. Moreover, neither of them is a great shooter yet, and calling the backcourt prospect better assumes that he will become a good shooter. If you’re not a good shooter, you’re better suited to the front court in general unless you’re a great perimeter defender, which these two are not. 11/22/2024

Player Updates: Amen Thompson has easily become a top 100 NBA player during his sophomore season, and that includes him missing 20 games at the start of the year with an injury. Some fans love Amen more than others. He’s a top 50 player if you take efficiency into account and outside of the top 100 if you don’t. That said, if you looked at his numbers, you’d think he’d easily be inside the top 100. With Amen playing so well, the Pistons have no choice but to ramp up Ausar’s minutes. 2/10/2025

Player Updates: Amen Thompson played very well during the Houston Rockets’ first-round exit against the Golden State Warriors. Amen was the standout for the Rockets who took the Warriors to 7 games during the 2024-25 NBA Playoffs. Thompson is a very good defender who was the delegated best defender and was given the task of stopping whoever was hot. Offensively, Thomspon has to work on his midrange and outside shooting, but he’s a good finisher around the rim already. I don’t view Thompson as a number 1 option on a contender because I don’t think he can fix his shooting. However, Thompson does look like a valuable piece who could potentially play for many years similar to Russell Westbrook. 5/5/2025
