The 2005–06 NBA D-League season marked the first year that the league operated under the NBA D-League name after previously being known as the National Basketball Development League (NBDL). Eight teams competed during the season, with the Fort Worth Flyers finishing atop the regular-season standings with a league-best 28–20 record.
The season concluded with the Albuquerque Thunderbirds winning the 2006 NBA D-League championship. Albuquerque entered the playoffs as the No. 2 seed before defeating Fort Worth in the Finals to capture the league title.

Fort Worth finished first at 28–20, while Albuquerque won the championship by defeating Fort Worth 119–108.
The playoff bracket shows Albuquerque defeating Florida 80–71 and Fort Worth defeating Roanoke 87–78 before Albuquerque beat Fort Worth 119–108 in the championship.
