After the inaugural season established the league, the 2002–03 NBDL season marked the second year of competition for the National Basketball Development League. The league again featured eight teams, with the Fayetteville Patriots finishing atop the regular-season standings at 32–18, earning the best record in the NBDL.
While Fayetteville led the league during the regular season, the Mobile Revelers captured the 2003 NBDL championship by defeating the Patriots 2–1 in the Finals. The season also featured a tightly contested playoff race, with Fayetteville, Mobile, the North Charleston Lowgators, and the Roanoke Dazzle qualifying for the postseason.

The 2002–03 NBDL had eight teams, each playing 50 regular-season games. Fayetteville finished with the league’s best record at 32–18, but the Mobile Revelers won the championship, defeating Fayetteville 2–1 in the best-of-three Finals.
The four playoff teams were Fayetteville, North Charleston, Mobile and Roanoke. Fayetteville swept Roanoke 2–0, while Mobile swept North Charleston 2–0. Mobile then defeated Fayetteville 2–1 in the Finals.
