The Chicago Sky joined the WNBA as an expansion franchise in 2006 and have been owned by only a small number of individuals and groups throughout their history. Stability at the ownership level has helped the franchise grow into one of the league’s most successful organizations.
Michael Alter (2006–Present)
The Chicago Sky were founded in 2006 by Chicago businessman Michael Alter, who secured the WNBA expansion franchise and became the team’s original owner.
During Alter’s tenure, the Sky developed from an expansion team into a perennial playoff contender. The franchise reached its first WNBA Finals in 2014 and achieved its greatest success in 2021, winning the first championship in team history behind stars Candace Parker, Kahleah Copper, Allie Quigley, and Courtney Vandersloot.

As the WNBA has grown, additional investors have joined the ownership structure, but Michael Alter has remained the controlling owner and the central figure guiding the franchise. Under his leadership, the Sky have continued investing in player resources, facilities, and the long-term growth of professional women’s basketball in Chicago.
