Since joining the NBA in 1968, the Phoenix Suns have had a relatively small number of ownership groups compared to many professional sports franchises. Each ownership era has played a significant role in shaping the organization’s direction and success.
Jerry Colangelo and the Original Ownership Group (1968–1987)
The Phoenix Suns were founded in 1968 by a group of investors led by Richard Bloch, Karl Eller, Don Pitt, Don Diamond, and others. Jerry Colangelo, who initially joined as the team’s general manager, became a key figure in the franchise’s growth. In 1987, Colangelo led a group that purchased the Suns, helping stabilize the organization during a difficult period.
Jerry Colangelo-Led Ownership (1987–2004)
Under Colangelo’s ownership, the Suns became one of the NBA’s most respected franchises. The team made numerous playoff appearances, reached the NBA Finals in 1993, and developed a reputation for consistent competitiveness. Colangelo’s influence extended beyond Phoenix, as he became one of the most prominent executives in basketball.
Robert Sarver (2004–2023)
In 2004, businessman Robert Sarver purchased the Phoenix Suns and the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury. During his tenure, the Suns experienced several successful periods, including the “Seven Seconds or Less” era led by Steve Nash and a return to the NBA Finals in 2021. Sarver sold the franchise in 2023 following an agreement to transfer ownership.
Mat Ishbia and Justin Ishbia (2023–Present)
In February 2023, brothers Mat Ishbia and Justin Ishbia completed the purchase of the Phoenix Suns. The acquisition was one of the largest transactions in NBA history. Under Mat Ishbia’s leadership as the controlling owner, the organization has pursued an aggressive approach to roster building with the goal of competing for an NBA championship.
