The Memphis Grizzlies began as the Vancouver Grizzlies in 1995 before relocating to Memphis in 2001. Although the franchise has experienced several ownership changes, only a handful of principal owners have guided the team through its history, from its expansion years in Canada to its current status as a competitive NBA franchise.
Arthur Griffiths (1995–2000)
Canadian businessman Arthur Griffiths was awarded the Vancouver Grizzlies expansion franchise in 1993, and the team began play in 1995. As the founding owner, Griffiths oversaw the NBA’s first venture into Vancouver. Financial challenges and ownership restructuring eventually led him to sell his controlling interest.
Michael Heisley (2000–2012)
Chicago businessman Michael Heisley purchased the franchise in 2000. One year later, he relocated the team from Vancouver to Memphis, where it became the Memphis Grizzlies. Under Heisley’s ownership, the franchise achieved its first sustained period of success and made multiple playoff appearances.
Robert Pera (2012–Present)
Technology entrepreneur Robert Pera acquired a controlling stake in the Grizzlies in 2012. As founder and CEO of Ubiquiti, Pera became one of the youngest owners in major North American sports. During his tenure, the Grizzlies have remained a consistent playoff contender and entered a new era built around young stars and long-term organizational stability.
