The Indiana Pacers were founded in 1967 as a member of the American Basketball Association (ABA) and later joined the NBA following the ABA-NBA merger in 1976. Throughout their history, the franchise has been controlled by a small number of ownership groups, most notably the Simon family, which has overseen the team for more than four decades.

Original Indianapolis Ownership Group (1967–1972)

The Pacers were established by a group of Indianapolis investors led by Richard Tinkham, Chuck Barnes, and other local businessmen. The ownership group brought professional basketball to Indiana and helped build the Pacers into one of the ABA’s most successful franchises. During this era, the team won multiple ABA championships and became a major part of Indiana’s basketball culture.

Sam Nassi and Associates (1972–1977)

California businessman Sam Nassi purchased a controlling interest in the Pacers in 1972. The franchise continued its success in the ABA before facing financial challenges after the ABA-NBA merger. Nassi’s ownership group eventually sold the team as the organization struggled with the costs associated with joining the NBA.

Melvin Simon and Herbert Simon (1983–2009)

Shopping mall developers Melvin and Herbert Simon acquired the Pacers in 1983. Their purchase helped stabilize the franchise financially and ensured the team remained in Indianapolis. Under the Simon brothers’ ownership, the Pacers became a consistent playoff contender and reached the NBA Finals in 2000.

Herbert Simon (2009–Present)

Following the death of Melvin Simon in 2009, Herbert Simon became the principal owner of the franchise. As the longest-serving owner in team history, Simon has overseen numerous successful eras while keeping the Pacers firmly rooted in Indianapolis. Under his leadership, the franchise has remained one of the NBA’s most stable organizations.
