The Golden State Warriors are one of the NBA’s oldest franchises, and their ownership history reflects the team’s evolution from a regional basketball club into a global sports brand. While several ownership groups have guided the franchise over the decades, only a few individuals or groups have served as principal owners.
Peter A. Tyrrell (1946–1962)
Peter A. Tyrrell was the founding owner of the Philadelphia Warriors, one of the original teams in the Basketball Association of America, which later became the NBA. Under his ownership, the franchise won the inaugural BAA championship in 1947 and established itself as an early professional basketball power.
Franklin Mieuli (1962–1986)
San Francisco businessman Franklin Mieuli purchased the Warriors in 1962. During his tenure, the team relocated fully to the Bay Area and won the 1975 NBA Championship behind Hall of Fame forward Rick Barry. Mieuli owned the franchise for nearly a quarter-century before selling the team in 1986.
Jim Fitzgerald and Dan Finnane (1986–1995)
Business partners Jim Fitzgerald and Dan Finnane acquired the Warriors in 1986. Their ownership period included the popular “Run TMC” era featuring Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond, and Chris Mullin. Although the team became one of the league’s most entertaining clubs, sustained playoff success proved elusive.
Chris Cohan (1995–2010)
Chris Cohan purchased the Warriors in 1995. Much of his ownership tenure was marked by struggles on the court, though the franchise enjoyed a memorable breakthrough during the “We Believe” playoff run in 2007. Cohan sold the team in 2010.
Joe Lacob and Peter Guber (2010–Present)
Joe Lacob and Peter Guber led the ownership group that purchased the Warriors in 2010. Their tenure has transformed the franchise into one of the NBA’s premier organizations. Under their ownership, Golden State won NBA championships in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022, while becoming one of the most valuable sports franchises in the world.
