Jalen Brunson was a guest on the All The Smoke podcast with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson recently and said that Rick Carlisle was a basketball genius when they spent time together on the Dallas Mavericks.
Jalen Brunson started by saying that he loves Rick and that he is different (as in quirky). But when it comes to basketball, Rick is a genius.

Stephen Jackson spent 1 year playing under Rick Carlisle and mentioned that he was the only coach he ever had who spoke to the starting five separately before the beginning of each season and told them his expectations for them. Jackson said he appreciated this because then all players know their roles and hinted that a player knowing their roles will help their basketball games.
Knowing your role is good, but in the NBA most players are young and have a lot of potential, which might be a reason coaches generally don’t do this. If you tell a player in the starting five their role, you now have limited their expectations for themselves. And if they were to exceed those expectations, it could land you in trouble.
