Illinois has one of those programs where the legends come in waves. There were the early stars who gave the school real national stature, the high-flying Lou Henson teams that made the Illini must-watch basketball, and then the 2005 group that nearly finished the job. The program has reached five Final Fours, but for a lot of fans, Illinois basketball history still runs most strongly through the Flyin’ Illini era and the Dee Brown–Deron Williams run to the 2005 national title game. 1. Deon Thomas

  • Years at Illinois: 1991–1994
  • Position: Forward/Center
  • Notable achievements:
    • Illinois all-time leading scorer with 2,129 points
    • Illinois all-time leader in blocked shots at the time of his career finish
    • Three-time team MVP
    • Illinois All-Century Team selection

Deon Thomas gets the top spot because no Illinois player has a stronger blend of production, longevity and historical weight. He finished his career as the program’s all-time leading scorer, was a constant force in the frontcourt, and left his name all over the record book. Illinois has had more nationally famous guards, but Thomas built the kind of four-year résumé that is very hard to top in a college legends ranking. (University of Illinois Athletics)

2. Dee Brown

  • Years at Illinois: 2002–2006
  • Position: Guard
  • Notable achievements:
    • 2005 Sporting News National Player of the Year
    • Two-time consensus All-American
    • 2005 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year
    • Led Illinois to the 2005 national championship game

Dee Brown belongs near the very top because he became the face of one of the best teams in school history. He was not just popular; he was elite, with national player of the year recognition, All-America honors and a lead role on the 37-win team that took Illinois to the title game. When people picture modern Illinois basketball at its best, Brown is usually the first player they think of. (University of Illinois Athletics)

3. Deron Williams

  • Years at Illinois: 2002–2005
  • Position: Guard
  • Notable achievements:
    • Consensus 2005 Second-Team All-American
    • Lead guard on Illinois’ 37-win national runner-up team
    • Third overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft
    • Two-time Olympic gold medalist after college

Deron Williams has a strong case to be even higher. At his best, he gave Illinois complete control of games with his poise, strength and passing. He was a major reason the 2005 team looked so calm in huge moments, and his college run was good enough to launch him into the top three of the NBA Draft. His pro career adds shine, but his Illinois place is secure even without it. (University of Illinois Athletics)

4. Nick Anderson

  • Years at Illinois: 1987–1989
  • Position: Guard/Forward
  • Notable achievements:
    • First-Team All-Big Ten
    • Star of the 1989 Final Four team
    • Midwest Regional Most Outstanding Player in 1989
    • Orlando Magic’s first-ever draft pick

Nick Anderson was one of the defining stars of the Flyin’ Illini, and his tournament résumé gives him a huge push in these rankings. His 1989 run helped send Illinois to the Final Four, and his buzzer-beater against Indiana still sits among the iconic moments in school history. He did not stay four years, but his peak and his role on a landmark team make him impossible to leave out of the top five. (University of Illinois Athletics)

5. Kendall Gill

  • Years at Illinois: 1987–1990
  • Position: Guard
  • Notable achievements:
    • Consensus Second-Team All-American in 1990
    • First-Team All-Big Ten
    • Led the Big Ten in scoring in 1990 at 20.0 points per game
    • Key member of the Flyin’ Illini Final Four team

Kendall Gill earns this spot because he brought star power and top-end scoring to one of the most famous teams Illinois has ever had. He was a highlight player, but he was also highly productive, leading the Big Ten in scoring as a senior and ranking near the top of the program’s steals list. On pure talent and explosiveness, few Illini have ever matched him. (University of Illinois Athletics)

6. Ayo Dosunmu

  • Years at Illinois: 2018–2021
  • Position: Guard
  • Notable achievements:
    • 2021 USA Today National Player of the Year
    • Consensus First-Team All-American
    • Bob Cousy Award winner
    • Big Ten Tournament Most Outstanding Player

Ayo Dosunmu has already earned a place in the Illinois top tier. He gave the program a genuine national superstar during the Brad Underwood era and helped drag Illinois back into the center of the college basketball conversation. The 2021 season alone would have been enough to make him a legend, and the fact that his jersey is already in the rafters says plenty about how he is viewed in Champaign. (University of Illinois Athletics)

7. Eddie Johnson

  • Years at Illinois: 1978–1981
  • Position: Forward
  • Notable achievements:
    • Illinois All-Century Team member
    • Illinois’ all-time leading NBA scorer
    • Helped lead Illinois to the 1980 NIT and 1981 NCAA Tournament
    • One of the great scorers in program history

Eddie Johnson deserves a high spot because he helped bridge Illinois from long stretches without much postseason success back into national relevance. He was a major scorer, hit one of the most famous shots in school history, and backed up his college reputation with a long NBA career. He is one of those names that still carries weight across multiple generations of Illini fans. (University of Illinois Athletics)

8. Kenny Battle

  • Years at Illinois: 1987–1989
  • Position: Forward
  • Notable achievements:
    • Face of the Flyin’ Illini style
    • Second-Team All-Big Ten in 1989
    • First-round NBA Draft pick
    • Illinois All-Century Team member

Kenny Battle was not just good; he helped define the personality of one of the coolest teams in school history. The Flyin’ Illini nickname fits a lot of players from that era, but Battle may have embodied it better than anyone. He was electric, he was productive, and he remains one of the most memorable athletes the program has produced. (University of Illinois Athletics)

9. Kofi Cockburn

  • Years at Illinois: 2019–2022
  • Position: Center
  • Notable achievements:
    • Two-time consensus All-American
    • Two-time Big Ten champion
    • Illinois career double-doubles record holder
    • One of the most decorated centers in school history

Kofi Cockburn makes the list because his peak was overwhelming. He gave Illinois dominant interior play, All-America production and a centerpiece around whom the entire offense could function. Illinois itself has called him arguably the greatest center in program history, and that is not a throwaway line when you look at the awards, the numbers and the way opposing teams had to game-plan for him. (University of Illinois Athletics)

10. Luther Head

  • Years at Illinois: 2001–2005
  • Position: Guard
  • Notable achievements:
    • Consensus Second-Team All-American in 2005
    • First-round NBA Draft pick
    • School record holder for three-pointers in a season at the time
    • Vital part of the 2005 national runner-up team

Luther Head rounds out the top 10 because that 2005 team does not become what it became without him. He spaced the floor, scored in bunches and gave Illinois another guard who could swing a game fast. Some players on this list have more individual hardware, but Head’s value to one of the greatest seasons in school history gives him a very strong legends case. (University of Illinois Athletics)

Honorable mentions

  • Don Freeman
  • Frank Williams
  • Brian Cook
  • Marcus Liberty

Don Freeman was one of the great early scorers in program history, Frank Williams was the 2001 Big Ten Player of the Year and one of the best point guards Illinois has had, Brian Cook was a major star before the 2005 breakthrough, and Marcus Liberty was another key piece of the Flyin’ Illini years. On another day, any of them could slide into the back end of the top 10. (University of Illinois Athletics)
