Alperen Şengün did not play college basketball in the United States. Instead, he developed his skills professionally in Turkey before entering the NBA. During the 2020–21 season, he played for Beşiktaş in the Turkish Basketball Super League (BSL), where he delivered an impressive performance.

In addition to his domestic league play, Şengün also participated in the 2020–21 FIBA Europe Cup, where he averaged 23.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.7 steals, and 2.0 blocks per game over three games, with a field goal percentage of 71.0%.
His standout performances earned him the Turkish BSL MVP award for the 2020–21 season. Following this successful season, Şengün declared for the 2021 NBA Draft and was selected 16th overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder, who then traded his rights to the Houston Rockets.
