Tyrese Haliburton has been involved in one major trade during his NBA career, which significantly impacted both his trajectory and the futures of the teams involved.
Trade: Sacramento Kings to Indiana Pacers (February 8, 2022)
On February 8, 2022, the Sacramento Kings traded Tyrese Haliburton, along with Buddy Hield and Tristan Thompson, to the Indiana Pacers. In return, the Kings received Domantas Sabonis, Justin Holiday, Jeremy Lamb, and a 2023 second-round draft pick.
This trade was surprising to many, as Haliburton was a promising young guard who had been selected 12th overall by the Kings in the 2020 NBA Draft. At the time of the trade, he was averaging 14.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, 7.4 assists, and 1.7 steals per game.
Haliburton expressed emotional distress upon learning about the trade, stating, “They don’t want me, they went in a different direction.”
Impact and Growth with the Indiana Pacers
Since joining the Pacers, Haliburton has flourished. He earned back-to-back Eastern Conference All-Star selections, serving as a reserve in 2023 and as a starter in 2024. In the 2023–24 season, he averaged nearly 21 points and over 10 assists per game, leading the league in assists and solidifying his role as the team’s cornerstone.
His leadership was instrumental in guiding the Pacers to their first Eastern Conference semifinal in a decade during the 2024 playoffs.
Recognizing his value, the Pacers signed Haliburton to a five-year, $260 million maximum contract extension in the 2024 offseason.
International Success
In addition to his NBA achievements, Haliburton represented Team USA at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, contributing to the team’s gold medal victory.
