Sandfort attended Waukee High School in Iowa, where he played basketball and golf. He averaged 19.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, and four assists as a junior. During his senior season, he averaged 16.6 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 3.1 assists, earning the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association 4A Player of the Year honors. He also contributed to Waukee’s state championship in golf as a senior. Sandfort committed to playing college basketball for Iowa over offers from several other programs.
At Iowa, Sandfort served as a role player off the bench during his freshman year, averaging five points and 1.9 rebounds per game over 34 games. He grew one inch between his freshman and sophomore years and entered his sophomore season as the Hawkeyes’ starting shooting guard. Despite some shooting struggles that led to a temporary move to the bench, he was named the Big Ten Conference Sixth Man of the Year at the end of the regular season.
Sandfort’s younger brother, Pryce, also plays basketball at Iowa, continuing the family’s athletic legacy. Their mother played basketball at Simpson College, and their father played at Hastings College.
