Sears began his high school career at Muscle Shoals High School in Alabama, where he led the team to the Class 6A state semifinal as a junior. He then transferred to Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia, averaging 14 points, three assists, and five rebounds per game, helping the team achieve a 37–4 record and reach the Final Four of the National Prep Championship.
At Ohio University, Sears earned First-team All-MAC honors in 2022 and was named to the MAC All-Freshman Team in 2021. He transferred to the University of Alabama in 2022, where he continued to excel, earning Second-team All-SEC honors in 2023 and First-team All-SEC honors in 2024. In 2024, he was also recognized as a consensus second-team All-American.
