Luka Dončić has experienced two significant transactions in his NBA career:

2018 Draft Night Trade: Atlanta Hawks to Dallas Mavericks

On June 21, 2018, during the NBA Draft, Luka Dončić was selected third overall by the Atlanta Hawks. However, he was immediately traded to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for the fifth overall pick, Trae Young, and a protected 2019 first-round pick. This move allowed the Mavericks to secure Dončić, who quickly became the cornerstone of their franchise.

2025 Blockbuster Trade: Dallas Mavericks to Los Angeles Lakers

In a stunning midseason move on February 2, 2025, the Dallas Mavericks traded Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers as part of a three-team deal involving the Utah Jazz. The trade details were as follows:

  • To Los Angeles Lakers: Luka Dončić, Maxi Kleber, Markieff Morris, and $55,000 from the Jazz.
  • To Dallas Mavericks: Anthony Davis, Max Christie, a 2029 first-round pick from the Lakers, and $55,000 from the Jazz.
  • To Utah Jazz: Jalen Hood-Schifino, a 2025 second-round pick from the Clippers via the Lakers, and a 2025 second-round pick from the Mavericks.

This trade marked the first time in NBA history that two reigning All-NBA Team players were exchanged midseason. The Mavericks cited a desire to improve team defense and concerns over Dončić’s conditioning and salary demands as reasons for the trade. The move was met with significant backlash from fans and analysts, with many viewing it as a lopsided deal favoring the Lakers.

Since joining the Lakers, Dončić has delivered strong offensive performances, averaging 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.5 assists over 28 games. However, the team faced challenges in the playoffs, being eliminated in the first round by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Dončić’s defensive struggles were highlighted during the series, leading to criticism from analysts and fans alike.

Looking ahead, Dončić has a player option for the 2026 season and is eligible for a four-year, $229 million extension starting August 2, 2025. While Lakers management is eager to secure his long-term commitment, Dončić has indicated he will take time to consider his future.
