The 2001–02 NBDL was the league’s inaugural season, with eight teams playing 56 games. Greenville Groove and North Charleston Lowgators tied for the best regular-season record at 36–20. Greenville won the inaugural championship, sweeping North Charleston 2–0 in the Finals.
The top four teams qualified for the playoffs. Greenville defeated Columbus 2–1 in the semifinals, while North Charleston defeated Mobile 2–1. Greenville then swept North Charleston 2–0 to become the first NBDL champion.
