I’ve always thought the biggest misconception about Lauri Markkanen is that he’s simply a tall shooter. The shooting is obvious, but the real problem he creates is how difficult he is to account for once the ball starts moving. He doesn’t spend entire possessions waiting behind the arc. He relocates constantly, sprints off pin-downs into quick releases, slips ghost screens when defenders anticipate contact, and attacks hard closeouts with long, economical strides that carry him to the rim in two or three dribbles. That’s what keeps defenders from crowding his jumper. He’s an efficient finisher because he rarely wastes motion, and while he’s capable of attacking mismatches in the post, he generally prefers catching the defense before it’s fully organized rather than grinding through isolations. Defensively, he’s at his best playing within structure. He rotates on time as the low man, uses his length to contest without fouling, and holds up well when he can defend bigger forwards, though asking him to switch onto quick guards or navigate repeated actions in space exposes some lateral limitations. The trade-off is that his influence drops if an offense becomes stagnant and asks him to manufacture difficult shots from a standstill.
